Genomic associations with antibody response to an oral cholera vaccine
Vaccine. 2023 Sep 10:S0264-410X(23)01084-8. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.09.016. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOral cholera vaccine is one of the key interventions used in our fight to end the longest pandemic of our time, cholera. The immune response conferred by the currently available cholera vaccines, as measured by serum antibody levels, is variable amongst its recipients. We undertook a genome wide association study (GWAS) on antibody response to the cholera vaccine; globally, the first GWAS on cholera vaccine response. We identified three clusters of bi-allelic SNPs, in high within-cluster linkage disequilibrium that...

Burdening Perspectives and Treatment Modalities of Monkeypox: A Central Dogma
Infect Disord Drug Targets. 2023 Aug 25. doi: 10.2174/1871526523666230825164222. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe monkeypox virus (MPXV), belonging to the genus Orthopoxvirus, is responsible for causing the zoonotic illness known as Monkeypox. The virus was initially identified during an outbreak at a Danish Zoo in 1958 and has since been found to infect various mammal species worldwide. While African squirrels and other rodents are believed to be the primary hosts, determining the natural host has proven challenging. While MPXV can be studied using different animal models in laboratory settings, understanding its natural...

Monkeypox Outbreak: an Overview of Potential Therapeutic Options
Opinion statementMonkeypox is an emergent pathogen that can be transmitted between humans and certain animal reservoirs. Although monkeypox belongs to orthopoxviruses including variola virus (smallpox) and resembles signs and symptoms of smallpox infection, it is rarely fatal. However, it may cause serious complications and death. In this review, we aim to summarize data on potential treatments for monkeypox infection. We found three antivirals (i.e., cidofovir, brincidofovir, and tecovirimat) posing antiviral activity against orthopoxviruses and having potential activity against monkeypox. Vaccinia immunoglobulin may be c...

Herd immunity, vaccination and moral obligation
The public health benefits of herd immunity are often used as the justification for coercive vaccine policies. Yet, ‘herd immunity’ as a term has multiple referents, which can result in ambiguity, including regarding its role in ethical arguments. The term ‘herd immunity’ can refer to (1) the herd immunity threshold, at which models predict the decline of an epidemic; (2) the percentage of a population with immunity, whether it exceeds a given threshold or not; and/or (3) the indirect benefit afforded by collective immunity to those who are less immune. Moreover, the accumulation of immune individua...

Emergence of Monkeypox (MPX): A Close Relative of Small Pox during Covid-19 Era
Infect Disord Drug Targets. 2023 Aug 23. doi: 10.2174/1871526523666230823105945. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAfter the eradication of smallpox (SPX), a new zoonotic threat that can trigger outbreaks has emerged. It may be fatal during the COVID19 outbreak. Humanity continues to be threatened due to the re-emergence of the outbreaks. In most cases, new emerging viral agents originate from nonhuman hosts with zoonotic origins. Recent outbreaks of zoonotic infectious diseases with the potential to cause epidemics and pandemics continue to pose a major threat to the health security of entire regions, continents, and the worl...
