Prescription analgesic medication use among osteoarthritis patients
CONCLUSION: The use of gabapentinoid increased rapidly from recent decade, while opioids use did not decrease. The long-term excessive use of opioids was also a serious problem for OA pain control. More improvements such as focusing more on healthcare education and paying more attention on non-pharmacotherapy and the psychological situation of patients are needed.PMID:37724650 | DOI:10.1177/10225536231202835

Modern Perioperative Pain Management Strategies to Minimize Opioids after Total Knee Arthroplasty
Orthop Clin North Am. 2023 Oct;54(4):359-368. doi: 10.1016/j.ocl.2023.05.002. Epub 2023 Jun 20.ABSTRACTTotal Knee Arthroplasty is associated with significant postoperative pain that can limit functional outcomes and patient satisfaction. In recent years, the standard of care for postoperative pain management has reduced reliance on opioids in favor of multimodal analgesia. These regimens consist of systemic medications such as COX-2 inhibitors, acetaminophen, corticosteroids, and gabapentinoids, as well as regional and local approaches such as peripheral nerve blocks and local infiltrative analgesics. Newer therapies, such...

Selenium Ameliorates Acetaminophen-Induced Oxidative Stress via MAPK and Nrf2 Pathways in Mice
Biol Trace Elem Res. 2023 Sep 13. doi: 10.1007/s12011-023-03845-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOverdose of acetaminophen (paracetamol), a widely used non-prescriptive analgesic and antipyretic medication, is one of the main causes of drug-induced acute liver failure around the world. Oxidative stress contributes to this hepatotoxicity. Antioxidants are known to protect the liver from oxidative stress. Selenium, a potent antioxidant, is a commonly used micronutrient. Here, we evaluated the protective effect of selenium on acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity. Treating Wistar albino mice with sodium selenite (1 mg/kg) befo...

Fabricating modified carbon sesame straw for adsorption of acetaminophen and ibuprofen from aqueous media: isotherm and kinetic models
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Sep 14. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29826-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAs acetaminophen (ACT) and ibuprofen (IBP) have serious environmental impacts, despite their widespread use in many countries, the present research examined the effectiveness of activated carbon made from straw and sesame stubble in removing ACT and IBP from water. To that end, the as-synthesized adsorbent was functionalized using zinc chloride. The maximum adsorption capacities were found to be 51.7 mg g-1 for ACT and 63.7 mg g-1 for IBP. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm results showed that the pseudo-second-order (...

Effect of Oral Prednisolone on Pain after Tonsillectomy with Sutures: A Randomized Clinical Trial
CONCLUSION: Numerous studies have been conducted on the effect of intravenous corticosteroids on this pain. However, there is no consensus on the analgesic role of oral corticosteroids for post-tonsillectomy pain. The present study showed that oral prednisolone is effective on post-operative pain compared to a placebo.PMID:37694239 | PMC:PMC10492605 | DOI:10.4103/abr.abr_410_22

Decoding SEC24 Homolog D, COPII coat complex component accuracy as a signature gene in three human cancers
In this study, we conducted an extensive investigation of SEC24D, aiming to elucidate its potential role and underlying mechanisms across multiple human tumors. Our analysis relied on data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databases. To validate our findings, we employed RNA sequencing (RNA-seq), targeted bisulfite sequencing (bisulfite-seq) molecular techniques. Our findings revealed elevated mRNA (Messenger RNA) and protein levels of SEC24D in different tumor tissues. However, the up-regulation of SEC24D was significantly correlated with shorter overall survival (OS), metastasis, and v...
