Influence of unilateral, asymptomatic severe carotid artery stenosis in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting.
CONCLUSIONS: 1.Asymptomatic, unilateral severe carotid artery stenosis does not increase the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction and mortality within 30 days of coronary artery bypass grafting. 2.The presence of asymptomatic unilateral, severe carotid artery stenosis increases the risk of cardiovascular events during the first 12 months postoperatively. More to Atherosclerosis than Stenosis: Symptomatic Carotid Artery with Intraplaque Hemorrhage (P5.285)
Conclusions:Current guidelines only address the degree of arterial narrowing when recommending carotid revascularization procedures for secondary stroke prevention. The most recent AHA-ASA guideline advises against revascularization procedures in less than 50% CA stenosis. These guidelines do not account for plaque morphology that may predict a high risk of early stroke recurrence as demonstrated by our patient.Disclosure: Dr. Rai has nothing to disclose. Risk factors of carotid plaque and carotid common artery intima ‐media thickening in a high‐stroke‐risk population
ConclusionThese findings revealed the risk factors of CP and CCAIMT, and an association between the risk factors and the CP numbers and the side of the CCAIMT. The risk factors of CP and CCAIMT, and an association between the risk factors and the CP numbers and the side of the CCAIMT.

Sleep Duration Is Associated With Subclinical Carotid Plaque Burden
CONCLUSIONS: The association between long sleep and subclinical carotid atherosclerosis may explain prior associations between long sleep and stroke.PMID:37470161 | DOI:10.1161/STROKEAHA.122.041967

The Association of Arsenic Metabolism with Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease, and Diabetes: A Systematic Review of the Epidemiological Evidence
Conclusions: Population level of iAs% and DMA%, but not MMA%, were associated with arsenic exposure levels. Overall, study findings suggest that higher MMA% was associated with an increased risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease, while lower MMA% was associated with an increased risk of diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Additional population-based studies and experimental studies are needed to further evaluate and understand the role of arsenic exposure in arsenic metabolism and the role of arsenic metabolism in disease development. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP577 Received: 01 June 2016 Revised: 26 February 2017 Acce...

Mediators of the Age Effect among Patients Treated with Carotid Artery Stenting: The Carotid Revascularization Endarterectomy Versus Stenting Trial (CREST) (P02.017)
CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that a longer carotid artery lesion length is a significant contributor to the increased risk of CAS in the elderly. However, attenuation of the age effect was modest, less than a 10% change in the hazard ratios. Other potential mediators such as tortuosity and atherosclerosis of the aortic arch and great vessels were not assessed. Non-anatomic factors that are more common with advancing age such as cerebral white matter disease and subclinical dementia were also not assessed and may play a role in how elderly patients respond to ischemic insults.Disclosure: Dr. Voeks has nothing to disclose...

Characterisation of factors associated with carotid stenosis in a population at high risk.
CONCLUSIONS. As forms of carotid atherosclerotic disease, moderate to severe stenosis is less frequent than a high burden of atherosclerotic plaques. Advanced age, smoking, dyslipidemia and hypertension are the main traditional risk factors associated with the degree of carotid stenosis. PMID: 24915030 [PubMed - in process]

Prevalence and distribution of calcified nodules in carotid arteries in correlation with clinical symptoms
ConclusionCN were found in 7.9% of arteries with carotid-plaques ≥2 mm by duplex-ultrasound; prevalence was significantly higher in symptomatic arteries with ≥30% stenosis compared to asymptomatic with<30% stenosis, suggesting that CN play a role in pathogenesis of ischemic stroke in a small subset of patients.

Effect of change in posture on maternal functional hemodynamics at 35 –37 weeks’ gestation
ConclusionsParadoxically, in late third trimester normal pregnancies both change from the supine to the sitting position and passive leg raising may result in increase in preload with consequent increase in cardiac index and stroke volume index and decrease in total peripheral resistance index. In pregnancies that develop PE or GH the effects of postural change on cardiovascular parameters are similar but less marked than in normotensive pregnancies.

Age-Dependence of Flow Homeostasis in the Left Ventricle
Conclusions: In average, blood spends 1 to 3 beats inside the LV with very low shear stress rates. The apical region is the most prone to blood stasis, particularly in mid-aged adults. The washout of blood in the normal LV is age-dependent due to physiological changes in the degree of apical penetration of the filling waves. Introduction Cardioembolic stroke is a major source of mortality and disability worldwide and blood stasis one of its major determinants (Adams et al., 1986). Left ventricular (LV) function has evolved to maximize mechanical efficiency and ensure organ perfusion at a low cost of energy and fill...

Carotid atherosclerosis in people of European, South Asian and African Caribbean ethnicity in the Southall and Brent revisited study (SABRE)
CONCLUSION: Prevalence of carotid artery atherosclerotic plaques varies by ethnicity, independent of risk factors. Lower plaque prevalence in in AC is consistent with their lower risk of CHD but not their higher risk of stroke. Higher cIMT in AC may be explained by risk factors. The similarity of plaque burden in SA and EA despite established differences in ASCVD risk casts some doubt on the utility of carotid ultrasound as a means of assessing risk across these ethnic groups.PMID:36762303 | PMC:PMC9902363 | DOI:10.3389/fcvm.2022.1002820
