Qingdao Port Cardiovascular Health Study: a prospective cohort study
Purpose In China, efforts are underway to respond to rapidly increasing rates of heart disease and stroke. Yet the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease in China may be different from that of other populations. Thus, there is a critical need for population-based studies that provide insight into the risk factors, incidence and outcomes of cardiovascular disease in China. The Qingdao Port Cardiovascular Health Study is designed to investigate the burden of cardiovascular disease and the sociodemographic, biological, environmental and clinical risk factors associated with disease onset and outcomes. Participants For this s...

Carotid Artery End-Diastolic Velocity and Future Cerebro-Cardiovascular Events in Asymptomatic High Risk Patients.
CONCLUSION: Carotid Doppler measurements in addition to IMT and plaque evaluation are independently associated with future CVEs in asymptomatic patients at risk for CAD. PMID: 26798388 [PubMed]

Risk Factors for Silent Lacunar Infarction in Patients with Transient Ischemic Attack.
CONCLUSIONS Age, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and carotid stenosis were independently associated with silent lacunar infarction in patients with TIA. PMID: 26864634 [PubMed - in process]

Risk of Venous Thromboembolism in Patients with Large Hemispheric Infarction Undergoing Decompressive Hemicraniectomy
Conclusions The rate of DVT and PE is remarkably high in patients with large hemispheric infarction undergoing decompressive hemicraniectomy despite prophylactic measures. We recommend routine screening for DVT in this population. Interventions beyond the standard prophylactic measures may be necessary in this high-risk group.

Simultaneous coronary and carotid revascularisation
Conclusion According to our experiences and results, the simultaneous performance of CEA and CABG in patients with severe coexisting carotid artery disease who require coronary revascularization has proved to be a safe and efficacious operative strategy in these high-risk patients.

Carotid Atherosclerosis and Cerebral Microbleeds: The Framingham Heart Study Epidemiology
Conclusions Cumulative vascular risk factor exposure may increase the risk of CMB, especially in deep regions. The apparent paradoxical association of carotid intima–media thickness progression with lower risk of CMB may reflect benefits of intensive vascular risk factor treatment among persons with higher cardiovascular risk and deserves further investigation. If replicated, the results may have potential implications for assessment of preventive and therapeutic interventions for subclinical cerebral hemorrhage.

Lower limb peripheral arterial disease in 268 patients in Guadeloupe.
CONCLUSION: In our population, an infrapopliteal site was more often found than a proximal site. Distal localization was associated with diabetes, and proximal localization with smoking. Cardiovascular risk factors exhibited an atypical pattern with a large majority of patients (88 %) having high blood pressure, two-thirds diabetes, but with very few (7 %) smokers. Peripheral arterial disease was more often associated with a history of stroke than with ischemic heart disease. PMID: 27289257 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Prostate size, nocturia, and the digital rectal exam: a cohort study of 30,500 men
ConclusionsDRE is a modestly accurate tool for measuring prostate volume. While DRE posterior surface area represents a statistically significant predictor of nocturia, the magnitude of effect suggests it has limited clinical utility for assessing this condition, particularly in the presence of cardiovascular risk factors. This article is protected by copyright. Maternal cardiac function at 35 –37 weeks’ gestation: prediction for preeclampsia and gestational hypertension
ConclusionsIn women developing term‐PE total peripheral resistance and MAP are increased and maternal cardiac output is reduced. However, assessment of maternal cardiac function at 35–37 weeks’ gestation is unlikely to improve the performance of screening for PE provided by maternal factors and MAP alone.

The Troms ø Study 1974-2016: forty years of cardiovascular research.
The Tromsø Study 1974-2016: forty years of cardiovascular research. Scand Cardiovasc J. 2016 Sep 21;:1-16 Authors: Njølstad I, Mathiesen EB, Schirmer H, Thelle DS Abstract The rapid increase of coronary heart disease mortality in Northern Norway during 1951-1970 was why the newly established University of Tromsø decided to start a study to identify major operating cardiovascular risk factors. The first Tromsø survey in 1974 suggested that the relatively high cardiovascular mortality was associated with elevated cholesterol levels and high prevalence of smoking, while high-density-lipoprotein-choles...

Maternal cardiovascular function at 35 –37 weeks’ gestation: Relation to maternal characteristics
ConclusionsMaternal cardiovascular parameters are affected by maternal characteristics, medical and obstetric history and they should therefore be converted into multiples of the normal median adjusted for significant independent predictors before their inclusion in combined screening for PE.

Longitudinal maternal haemodynamics in fetal growth restriction in pregnancies at high risk for placental insufficiency
ConclusionSerial assessment of maternal haemodynamics in high risk women illuminates distinctive trends associated with gestations destined to deliver babies under the 10th and 5th percentiles. These pregnancies have a suppressed and static maternal cardiac output and stroke volume and have consistently raised peripheral vascular resistance. This suggests that fetal growth restriction is associated with a primary and persistent failure of maternal cardiovascular adaptation in pregnancy in women with chronic hypertension or a history of hypertensive disorder in a previous pregnancy.

Association of Subjective and Objective Sleep Duration as well as Sleep Quality with Non-Invasive Markers of Sub-Clinical Cardiovascular Disease (CVD): A Systematic Review.
CONCLUSIONS: Overall, our review provided mixed results, which is generally in line with published literature, with most of the studies showing a significant relationship with subclinical CVD, but only some studies failed to demonstrate such an association. Although such mechanistic relationship needs further evaluation in order to determine appropriate screening strategies in vulnerable populations, this review strongly suggested the existence of a relationship between abnormal sleep duration and quality with increased subclinical CVD burden.
