Urine Arsenic and Arsenic Metabolites in U.S. Adults and Biomarkers of Inflammation, Oxidative Stress, and Endothelial Dysfunction: A Cross-Sectional Study
Conclusion: In a cross-sectional study of U.S. adults, we observed some positive associations of uAs and toenail As concentrations with biomarkers potentially relevant to CVD pathogenesis and inflammation, and evidence of a higher capacity to metabolize inorganic As was negatively associated with a marker of oxidative stress. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP2062 Received: 14 April 2017 Revised: 13 November 2017 Accepted: 15 November 2017 Published: 15 December 2017 Address correspondence to S.F. Atherosclerosis in systemic lupus erythematosus
Publication date: June 2017Source: Best Practice & Research Clinical Rheumatology, Volume 31, Issue 3Author(s): Sara Croca, Anisur RahmanAbstractCardiovascular disease (CVD), comprising coronary heart disease and stroke, is one of the most important causes of death in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The risks of developing both clinical CVD and sub-clinical atherosclerosis are increased in patients with SLE. This increase is not fully explained by traditional cardiovascular risk factors such as smoking, hypertension and elevated cholesterol, and it is believed that immune dysfunction also contributes to C...

Evaluation of the effects of right ventricular pressure load on left ventricular myocardial mechanics in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease by ultrasound speckle tracking imaging.
CONCLUSIONS: Left ventricular whole peak rotation angle can be used to sensitively evaluate the change of left ventricular myocardial mechanics function in PH patients, and can reflect changes of left ventricular myocardial mechanics function in patients with COPD when mild PH occurs. Maternal hemodynamics in screen positive and negative women of the ASPRE trial.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients who screen positive for impaired placentation, even if they do not develop PE or deliver SGA neonates, have pathological cardiac adaptation in pregnancy and increased risk of adverse perinatal outcome. Comparison of Carotid Ultrasound Indices and the Triglyceride Glucose Index in Hypertensive and Normotensive Community-Dwelling Individuals: A Case Control Study for Evaluating Atherosclerosis.
Conclusions: HTN was an independent risk of carotid IMT thickening and atherosclerosis. TyG index could only predict the CCA IMT independent of other risk factors (OR = 2.09; CI = 1.07⁻4.09). PMID: 30344302 [PubMed - in process]

Another Chance for Medtronic ’s Renal Denervation Therapy
Medtronic has yet another chance to prove its renal denervation therapy can treat uncontrolled hypertension. The Dublin-based company has received FDA approval to begin a clinical trial to evaluate the Symplicity Spyral renal denervation system with patients on medication for high blood pressure. The ON MED Trial is a 2:1 randomized, sham-controlled study and will randomize up to 340 patients at 55 centers in the U.S., Japan, Europe, Australia and Canada. Patients will be followed out to three years. Primary safety endpoints will include major adverse events at one month and new renal artery stenosis at six months. The pri...

Cerebral Venous Thrombosis: An Uncommon Cause of Papilledema on Bedside Ocular Ultrasound
Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is a rare, difficult-to-diagnose form of venous thromboembolic disease and is considered a type of stroke. Its presentation is highly variable and may be easily confused for more common and less debilitating or life-threatening diagnoses such as migraine, seizure, or idiopathic intracranial hypertension.

Characteristics of patients presenting with myocardial infarction with non-obstructive coronary arteries (MINOCA) in Poland: data from the ORPKI national registry
AbstractMyocardial infarction (MI) with non-obstructive coronary arteries (MINOCA) is an important clinical problem especially in the era of extensive utilization of coronary angiography in MI patients. Its pathophysiology is poorly understood which makes diagnostics and treatment of MINOCA challenging in everyday clinical practice. The aim of the study was to assess characteristics of MINOCA patients in Poland based on data from the Polish National ORPKI Registry. In 2016, 49,893 patients with non-ST-segment elevation (NSTEMI) or ST-segment elevation (STEMI) myocardial infarction entered the ORPKI registry. MINOCA was def...

Poor Sleep Linked To Dangerous Plaque Buildup In Arteries
By Sandee LaMotte, CNN (CNN) — Here’s another reason why getting a good night’s sleep should be on your must-do list: Sleeping fewer than six hours a night or waking frequently raises your risk of developing damaging plaque in arteries throughout your body, not just your heart. Previous research has shown poor sleep to be strongly associated with coronary heart disease, but “This is the first study to show that objectively measured sleep is independently associated with atherosclerosis throughout the body,” José Ordovás, director of nutrition and genomics at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutriti...

Carotid intima–media thickness, but not chronic kidney disease independently associates with noncardiac arterial vascular events in South Africa
Aim: Although chronic kidney disease (CKD) as determined from estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is recommended for risk prediction by current hypertension guidelines, the equations to derive eGFR may not perform well in black Africans. We compared whether across the adult lifespan, eGFR or CKD are as closely associated with noncardiac arterial vascular events, as carotid intima–media thickness (IMT), in Africa. Methods: In 1152 black South Africans [480 with noncardiac arterial events (294 with critical lower limb ischemia, 186 with stroke) of which 37% were premature] and 672 age, sex and ethnicity-matche...

Plant-Derived Alkaloids: The Promising Disease-Modifying Agents for Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Conclusion This paper summarizes the current findings regarding the anti-colitis activity of plant-derived alkaloids and shows how these alkaloids exhibit significant and beneficial effects in alleviating colonic inflammation. These natural alkaloids are not only promising agents for IBD treatment but are also components for developing new wonder drugs. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms or toxicological evaluation of most plant-derived alkaloids still require much scientific research, and their actual efficacies for IBD patients have not been verified well in field research. Thus, further clinical trials to elu...
