Left Thalamus Arteriovenous Malformation Secondary to Radiation Therapy of Original Vermian Arteriovenous Malformation: Case Report
A 70-year-old gentleman with history of hypothyroidism, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and right superior cerebellar aneurysm presented to the neurosurgery service in 2008 with vertigo. Diagnostic cerebral angiography performed that year demonstrated a vermian arteriovenous malformations (AVM). The patient underwent stereotactic proton beam radiosurgery, which resulted in a decrease in flow and size of the lesion, and the patient was lost to follow-up. Now at the age of 80, the patient presented with acute gait instability.

A descriptive pilot study of mitochondrial mutations & clinical phenotype in fibromyalgia syndrome.
A descriptive pilot study of mitochondrial mutations & clinical phenotype in fibromyalgia syndrome. Indian J Med Res. 2019 Jan;149(1):47-50 Authors: Danda S, Thomas BM, Paramasivam G, Thomas R, Mathew J, Danda D Abstract Background & objectives: : Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is one of the most common chronic pain conditions of unknown aetiology. Mitochondrial dysfunction has been reported in FMS with some studies reporting the presence of mitochondrial mutation namely A3243G, which also causes mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes. This pilot study was condu...

Comparison of the risk for dementia between physicians and the general population: a nationwide population-based cohort study.
CONCLUSIONS: Physicians had a lower prevalence for dementia than the general population. The prevalence for dementia in specific subgroups of physicians was higher, which needs to be clarified by further studies. PMID: 31428999 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Management of Hypothyroidism in Patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction.
Conclusion: A history of hypothyroidism and the degree of TSH elevation seem to guide the management of hypothyroidism in patients with AMI. The clinical effect of correcting hypothyroidism in this setting requires further evaluation. PMID: 32353935 [PubMed - in process]

A case of cerebral vasculitis due to neurobartonellosis
We report a case of a 60-year-old right-handed woman with hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and hypothyroidism who presented with a three-week history of recurrent thunderclap headaches accompanied by photophobia, phonophobia, nausea, and vomiting. She reported one brief episode of slurred speech, expressive aphasia, right facial droop, and right hemiparesis suggestive of a TIA. Family history was remarkable for primary angiitis of the CNS (PACNS) in the mother. Neurologic examination was unremarkable. CT of the head was negative; CT angiography (CTA) of the head and neck suggested fibromuscular dysplasia in bilateral cervical...

Clinical Manifestations of Copper Deficiency: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.
CONCLUSIONS: Our patient presented with copper deficiency secondary to malabsoprtion. This case highlights the importance of copper testing in the bariatric surgery population and in patients with short-bowel syndrome. Given the irreversible nature of neurological symptoms when compared with the expense of nutrition supplements, routine copper testing should be considered in patients with malabsorptive states or altered anatomy, regardless of initial presentation. Relation between Thyroid Function and Mortality in patients with Chronic Heart Failure
Thyroid hormones have genomic and non-genomic effects on the cardiovascular system. They increase stroke volume, heart rate, and reduce systemic vascular resistance. (1) Overt thyroid disease (both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism) can cause heart failure. (2) Subclinical thyroid dysfunction is present when serum thyroid-stimulating hormone level (TSH) is outside the reference range, but free thyroxine (fT4), and total or free triiodothyronine level (T3) are normal. (3) In subclinical hyperthyroidism, TSH is low, and in subclinical hypothyroidism, TSH is raised.

A unique finding of the basilar artery
AbstractVariants of the posterior intracranial circulation are important for surgeon, interventionalists and radiologists. Herein, a unique configuration of the basilar artery is reported. A 54-year-old man with a history of COPD, hypothyroidism, smoking, and hyperlipidemia presented to an outside institution with nausea, confusion, altered mental status, and ataxia. The patient was evaluated for stroke. Imaging revealed rotation of the basilar apex of 180 degrees, fetal configuration of the posterior communicating artery, right posterior cerebral artery filling from the left vertebral artery, and duplication of the left a...

Targeted Cancer Therapies.
Abstract Targeted cancer therapies involve chemotherapeutic agents that attack, directly or indirectly, a specific genetic biomarker found in a given cancer. Targeted oncology includes monoclonal antibodies, small molecule inhibitors, antibody-drug conjugates, and immunotherapy. For example, the monoclonal antibodies trastuzumab and pertuzumab target human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) and are used when treating HER2-positive breast cancer. Although targeted oncology has improved survival by years for some incurable cancers such as metastatic breast and lung cancer, as few as 8% of patients with advanc...

Genetic analysis of obstructive sleep apnoea discovers a strong association with cardiometabolic health
There is currently limited understanding of the genetic aetiology of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). We aimed to identify genetic loci associated with OSA risk, and to test if OSA and its comorbidities share a common genetic background. We conducted the first large-scale genome-wide association study of OSA using the FinnGen study (217 955 individuals) with 16 761 OSA patients identified using nationwide health registries. We estimated 0.08 (95% CI 0.06–0.11) heritability and identified five loci associated with OSA (p<5.0x10–8): rs4837016 near GAPVD1 (GTPase activating protein and VPS9 domains 1), rs1092856...

Hypothyroidism is associated with clinical outcomes in patients with acute myocardial infarction: subgroup analysis of China PEACE study
ConclusionCompared with euthyroid status, hypothyroid status has an independent predicting value for adverse cardiovascular events in AMI patients. Further investigations are required to illustrate whether treatment of thyroid dysfunction could improve the prognosis of AMI patients.
