Medical researchers affiliated with Dallas-based UT Southwestern Medical Center have unveiled an online tool designed to “calculate” a person’s risk level for heart attack or stroke. Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) today released six-month results from a trial of its Symplicity Spyral renal denervation system exploring its use treating hypertensive patients who are already taking anti-hypertension medications, touting significant reductions in blood pressure and no major adverse safety events.

Although only ACEIs have evidences showing its effect in reducing cardiovascular events and all secondary outcomes, head-to-head comparisons did not provide strong evidence in difference in the effects between these blood pressure-lowering drugs.

Ten-year association of coronary artery calcium with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) events: the multi-ethnic study of atherosclerosis (MESA)
ConclusionsCoronary artery calcium is associated strongly and in a graded fashion with 10-year risk of incident ASCVD as it is for CHD, independent of standard risk factors, and similarly by age, gender, and ethnicity. While 10-year event rates in those with CAC = 0 were almost exclusively below 5%, those with CAC ≥ 100 were consistently above 7.5%, making these potentially valuable cutpoints for the consideration of preventive therapies. Coronary artery calcium strongly predicts risk with the same magnitude of effect in all races, age groups, an d both sexes, which makes it among the most useful markers for predicting ASCVD risk.

Relationship between sleep disordered breathing and coronary artery calcium in ischemic stroke patients
Introduction: Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is associated with increased risk of stroke and cardiovascular mortality. In ischemic patients, the major cause of death during follow-up is coronary artery disease. Coronary calcium score (CAC) is a score measured from quantification of calcified plaques with chest computed tomography. CAC has been shown to be associated with future risk of myocardial infarction and cardiovascular mortality. Several studies showed the positive correlation between sleep apnea and CAC in normal population, which may be contributed by progressive worsening of atherosclerosis.
