Comparisons between Garcia, modo, and longa rodent stroke Scales: Optimizing resource allocation in rat models of focal middle cerebral artery occlusion
The use of rodent stroke models allow for the understanding of stroke pathophysiology. There is currently no gold standard neurological assessment to measure deficits and recovery from stroke in rodent models. Agreement on a universal preclinical stroke scale allows for comparison of the outcomes among conducted studies. The present study aimed to compare three routinely used neurological assessments in rodent studies (i.e., Garcia, Modo, and Longa) to determine which is most effective for accurately and consistently quantifying neurological deficits in the context of focal middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo) in rats.

ACDD4 score: A simple tool for assessing risk of pneumonia after stroke
Pneumonia is a serious but a preventable stroke complication. Prediction scales for post-stroke pneumonia have been proposed with an intent to improve surveillance and prevention but they remain under-utilized in clinical practice. Most existing scales were developed using both ventilated and non-ventilated patients which may affect their accuracy. We derived and validated a novel, pragmatic scale to predict hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) after stroke employing only a non-ventilated stroke cohort.

Stroke survivors in Nigeria: A door-to-door prevalence survey from the Niger Delta region
This study aimed to provide a comparative estimate of the prevalence of stroke survivors in the rural Niger Delta region. A three-phased door –to-door survey was conducted using WHO modified instruments. In the first-phase, 2028 adults (≥18years) participants randomly selected from two rural communities were screened by trained health research assistants for probable stroke.

Stroke minimization through additive anti-atherosclerotic agents in routine treatment (SMAART): A pilot trial concept for improving stroke outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa
There has been an unprecedented rise in the prevalence of stroke in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), which when compared to stroke profiles in high-income countries (HIC) is characterized by a younger age of onset, higher case fatality rates, and more severe disability among survivors. Stroke survivors in SSA (vs. HIC) are especially at high risk for recurrent vascular events or death due to undiagnosed or under-controlled vascular risk factors, logistical challenges, low health literacy, and lack of care affordability.

Delayed elevation of plasma brain natriuretic peptide as a cue to diagnosis of atrial fibrillation in cryptogenic stroke: A case report
The cause of ischemic stroke is thought to be undetermined in around a quarter of patients [1]. Elevated plasma brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels in acute stroke patients are shown to be associated with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) [2]. It is widely recognized that elevated BNP levels on admission in cryptogenic stroke patients may be prognostic of AF. However, the relation between AF in cryptogenic stroke and elevated BNP levels on sub-acute or chronic phase have not been well established.

Effects of educational television commercial on pre-hospital delay in patients with ischemic stroke wore off after the end of the campaign
In patients with ischemic stroke, the time until initiation of therapy is an important factor for good clinical outcome because thrombolysis by intravenous tissue plasminogen activator or endovascular thrombectomy is only an option for a limited time after the onset of stroke. A number of campaigns have been conducted to increase awareness of stroke symptoms and to urge those suffering symptoms to visit hospital promptly when stroke is suspected. However, sufficient evidence for their effects on behavior changes of the lay public is not available [1].

Public stroke knowledge, awareness, and response to acute stroke: Multi-center study from 4 Egyptian governorates
Acute stroke treatment has significantly improved over the years in Egypt. However, there is often notable delay in pre-hospital and in-hospital management of acute stroke patients. The delay may be largely attributed to poor stroke knowledge and awareness of the general public and this study was aimed at the evaluation of the abovementioned factors.

The clinical utility of a 30-minute neuropsychological assessment battery in inpatient stroke rehabilitation
Cognitive assessment is an important component of inpatient stroke rehabilitation. Few studies have empirically evaluated the clinical utility of specific neuropsychological measures in this setting. We investigated the psychometric properties and clinical utility of a 30-minute neuropsychological battery developed by the National Institute of Neurologic Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and the Canadian Stroke Network (CSN). Clinical data were analyzed from 100 individuals with mild-moderate stroke severity on an acute inpatient rehabilitation unit who completed the NINDS-CSN battery at admission.

Fatal ischemic stroke caused by cerebral small arteritis in a patient with giant cell arteritis
Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is characterized by autoimmune vasculitis involving large and medium-sized vessels [1,2]. Ischemic stroke is seen in 2.8 –7% of patients with GCA, and the prognosis of GCA patients after developing ischemic stroke is unfavorable, especially in patients with involvement of intracranial large arteries [1,3,4]. Here, we describe an autopsy case of GCA in which the patient presented with ischemic stroke related to multi ple intracranial large-artery stenoses, and ultimately fatal ischemic stroke.

Decreased fractal dimension of heart rate variability is associated with early neurological deterioration and recurrent ischemic stroke after acute ischemic stroke
Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) may experience early neurological deterioration (END) and have high risks of recurrent ischemic strokes (RIS), which are often associated with a poor outcome. Post-stroke prognosis is associated with autonomic status. Recently, studies showed that heart rate variability (HRV) is an early outcome predictor in acute stroke patients. The purpose of our study was to investigate association decreased HRV by fractal dimension (FD) with early END within 72  h of admission and 1-year RIS.

Hydrogen as a complementary therapy against ischemic stroke: A review of the evidence
Ischemic stroke is one of the most common sources of mortality in the world. Researchers have been trying to find a complementary therapy to treat ischemic stroke in order to improve its prognosis and expand the therapeutic window for reperfusion treatment. For this reason, many experimental and clinical trials studying the effects of hydrogen against ischemic stroke have been published. Hydrogen gas has been found to eliminate hydroxyl free radical and peroxynitrite anions as well as producing therapeutic effect in patients with ischemic stroke.
