Association Between Calcium Supplementation and the Risk of Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke: A  Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Some observational studies and randomised controlled trials (RCTs) have reported an association between calcium supplementation and increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Previous meta-analyses on the topic, based on data from RCTs and observational studies, have contradictory findings. This meta-analysis was conducted to determine the difference in associated risks of calcium supplementation with cardiovascular disease and stroke in RCTs.

The Association Between Sex Hormones and Incident Stroke
There is a distinct difference in both the incidence and outcomes of stroke between men and women. Women have a higher lifetime risk of stroke than men and are more likely to have a more severe post-stroke deficit. The underlying mechanisms driving this remain unclear.

A Novel Speckle-Tracking Echocardiographic Parameter Assessing Left Ventricular Loading During VA ECMO in a Pre-clinical Model of Cardiogenic Shock
Left ventricular (LV) stroke work index (SWI) and cardiac power index (CPI) are considered load-independent parameters and can yield better prognostic values than LV ejection fraction (EF) in cardiogenic shock. However, accurate measurement of these parameters using Pressure-Volume catheters (PVC) is too invasive for routine clinical use. The aim of this study was to investigate whether Pressure-Strain Product (PSP), a novel Speckle-Tracking echocardiography (STE) parameter, can non-invasively predict PVC-based LV SWI and CPI in an ovine model of cardiogenic shock undergoing peripheral VA ECMO.

Factors Associated With Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events in Working and Non-working Aged Survivors of Ischaemic Stroke: A Linked Registry Study
Many survivors of stroke experience a major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE). We aimed to determine the incidence of, and risk factors for, MACE after first-ever ischaemic stroke, by age-group.

Preventing Heart Attack and Stroke Events Through Surveillance (PHASES): Evaluation of a Health Analytics System for Primary Care
National cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk guidelines recommend population-level screening and pharmacotherapy of high CVD risk individuals. A validated CVD surveillance system that provides up-to-date risk factor measurements and treatments across the population is lacking. Crucial evidence gaps exist on the magnitude and distribution of CVD risk and treatments nationally. We evaluated an existing national health analytics system (HAS) as a potential CVD surveillance system.

Association Between Physical Activity and Risk of Incident Cardiovascular Disease in Women With Early Menopause: Evidence From the UK Biobank Cohort
This study sought to determine the association of early menopause with incident coronary heart disease (CHD), heart failure (HF), arrhythmia and stroke, and evaluate if higher physical activity (PA) is protective in this setting.

Rheumatic Heart Disease Echocardiogram Screening by Nonexperts: A Review
Rheumatic Heart Disease occurs when heart valves are damaged by Rheumatic Fever. Young First Nations Australians aged between 5 –14 years are at high risk of developing Rheumatic Fever. Complications of Rheumatic Heart Disease include atrial fibrillation, endocarditis, heart failure, and stroke. Early disease detection is essential as Acute Rheumatic Fever is easily treatable if detected early.

Using an Implantable Loop Recorder to Investigate the Incidence of New Onset Atrial Fibrillation at One Month Following Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation
New-onset AF (NOAF) is independently associated with increased death and rehospitalisation post-TAVI and may also explain delayed onset stroke. The incidence is estimated to be 10% at one month, but this has not been well studied.

Outcomes Following Bleeding on Direct Oral Anticoagulants in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation at Liverpool Hospital
Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are vital in atrial fibrillation (AF) stroke prevention. On-treatment bleeding has significant morbidity and mortality. Dabigatran is reversible with an available specific agent; however, the Factor-Xa-Inhibitor (FxaI) reversal-agent has limited availability.

Occam ’s Razor Versus Hickam’s Dictum in a Presentation of STEMI
A 79-year-old female presented with an inferolateral STEMI on a background of a recent multi-territorial stroke, hypertension, hypercholesterolaemia, and prior thyroidectomy for thyroid cancer. Percutaneous intervention involved a drug-eluting balloon to the culprit oblique marginal artery and medically managed calcified 80% ostial right coronary artery (RCA). New paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) was noted. Transthoracic echocardiogram revealed a 13x7 mm mobile aortic valve mass with mild regurgitation.
