A Novel Speckle-Tracking Echocardiographic Parameter Assessing Left Ventricular Loading During VA ECMO in a Pre-clinical Model of Cardiogenic Shock
Left ventricular (LV) stroke work index (SWI) and cardiac power index (CPI) are considered load-independent parameters and can yield better prognostic values than LV ejection fraction (EF) in cardiogenic shock. However, accurate measurement of these parameters using Pressure-Volume catheters (PVC) is too invasive for routine clinical use. The aim of this study was to investigate whether Pressure-Strain Product (PSP), a novel Speckle-Tracking echocardiography (STE) parameter, can non-invasively predict PVC-based LV SWI and CPI in an ovine model of cardiogenic shock undergoing peripheral VA ECMO.
