Association between use of amiodarone for non-valvular atrial fibrillation and patient survival: from the prospective China Atrial Fibrillation Registry.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study indicated that amiodarone use was not significantly associated with a lower risk of 1-year all-cause mortality compared with a non-AAD strategy in "real-world" patients with NVAF. PMID: 33273373 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Rationale and Design of the H-REPLACE Study: Safety and Efficacy of LMWH Versus Rivaroxaban in ChinEse Patients HospitaLized with Acute Coronary SyndromE
ConclusionsThe H-REPLACE trial offers an opportunity to assess clinical outcomes of rivaroxaban versus enoxaparin during the acute phase of ACS and may provide an alternative anticoagulation strategy for ACS patients, who missed the primary reperfusion therapy window and before selective revascularization.Trial RegistrationClinicalTrials.gov; NCT03363035.

The relationship between the platelet to leukocyte ratio and mechanical thrombectomy outcomes in acute ischemic stroke patients.
CONCLUSION: Platelet to leukocyte ratio may be use to assess the risk of functional outcome and sICH in patients with acute anterior circulation occlusion stroke undergoing endovascular treatment in real world China. PMID: 32643590 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Comparative Outcomes Between Direct Oral Anticoagulants, Warfarin, and Antiplatelet Monotherapy Among Chinese Patients with Atrial Fibrillation: A Population-Based Cohort Study
ConclusionAntiplatelet prescribing and suboptimal warfarin management remain common in Chinese patients with AF at high risk of stroke. DOAC use may be associated with a lower risk of ischemic stroke and all-cause mortality when compared with antiplatelets and with a lower risk of ICH when compared with warfarin.

Clinical characteristics of cerebral hemorrhage with bilateral sudden deafness as the first symptom
ConclusionThe results showed that patients were mostly middle-aged and elderly with no typical stroke symptoms, and a history of stroke and hypertension increased the risk of hearing loss. The cause of hearing loss in patients with cerebral hemorrhage may be related to the damage of the hearing conduction pathway or (and) the lack of blood supply to the central auditory nervous system. Detecting hearing impairment in time and actively intervening can help most patients to improve their hearing significantly. The degree of hearing damage and recovery is related to the bleeding site, the amount of bleeding, and the timely treatment.

Dual Antiplatelet Therapy Duration in Medically Managed Acute Coronary Syndrome Patients: Sub-Analysis of the OPT-CAD Study
ConclusionMMACS patients with insufficient DAPT management experienced relatively more ischemic events. DAPT for at least 1  year may be beneficial to this special population without significantly increasing the bleeding risks.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov identifier, NCT01735305.

Efficacy and Safety of Ginkgo biloba in Patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
Abstract Ginkgo biloba and its extract have been suggested to have a neuroprotective role in patients with acute ischemic stroke. We aimed to examine the efficacy and safety of Ginkgo biloba use in patients with acute ischemic stroke. We searched seven databases for randomized controlled studies examining the use of Ginkgo biloba in patients with acute ischemic stroke. Relevant studies were retrieved, screened, and data were extracted independently by two reviewers. Random effects meta-analyses were performed to evaluate the efficacy and safety outcomes of Ginkgo biloba. We subsequently assessed the certainty of e...

Persistence, effectiveness and safety of dabigatran in “real-world” Chinese patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation
In conclusion, it is of importance for Chinese clinicians to know about these information because dabigatran is a relatively new drug in China. Compared with other reported data, patients of this study have (1) lower dabigatran persistence and lower incident rates of all-cause death, systemic embolism, minor bleeding events and gastrointestinal hemorrhage and (2) higher incident rates of ischemic stroke and intracranial hemorrhage.

Homocysteine Level Predicts Response to Dual Antiplatelet in Women With Minor Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack: Subanalysis of the CHANCE Trial.
CONCLUSIONS: Homocysteine could be a potential biomarker to discriminate the effects of dual and single antiplatelet therapy in female patients with minor ischemic stroke or high-risk transient ischemic attack. Lower versus Standard INR Targets in Atrial Fibrillation: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.
CONCLUSION:  Moderate quality evidence suggests lower INR targets reduce bleeding but increase thromboembolism in AF. The data are dominated by East-Asian studies, limiting generalizability to Western populations. Until higher quality data demonstrate otherwise, an INR range of 2 to 3 should remain standard for thromboembolic prophylaxis in AF. PMID: 31940677 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Many take anticoagulants and OTC supplements, which poses risk
FINDINGSNearly 98% percent of people prescribed direct-acting oral anticoagulants such as apixaban also used  over-the-counter products. Of those, 33% took at least one such product that, in combination with the anticoagulants, could cause dangerous internal bleeding. People taking these medications largely lacked knowledge of some potentially serious interactions.BACKGROUNDDirect-acting oral anticoagulants are the drug of choice for stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation, which occurs most frequently in older patients. Apixaban is one of the most frequently prescribed. However, most people prescribed apix...

Unexpected complication of arteriovenous fistula of the left common carotid to internal jugular vein following central venous catheterization.
Abstract Incidence of inadvertent arterial puncture secondary to central venous catheter insertion is not common with an arterial puncture rate of <1%. This is due to the advancements and wide availability of ultrasound to guide its insertion. Formation of arteriovenous fistula after arterial puncture is an unexpected complication. Till date, only five cases (including this case) of acquired arteriovenous fistula formation has been described due to inadvertent common carotid puncture. The present case is a 26-year-old man sustained traumatic brain injuries, chest injuries and multiple bony fractures. During res...
