Dual energy computed tomography for the head
AbstractDual energy CT (DECT) is a promising technology that provides better diagnostic accuracy in several brain diseases. DECT can generate various types of CT images from a single acquisition data set at high kV and low kV based on material decomposition algorithms. The two-material decomposition algorithm can separate bone/calcification from iodine accurately. The three-material decomposition algorithm can generate a virtual non-contrast image, which helps to identify conditions such as brain hemorrhage. A virtual monochromatic image has the potential to eliminate metal artifacts by reducing beam-hardening effects. DEC...

Abstract P451: Cerebrovasuclular Events in Patients With Primary Aldosteronism: Results of the PA Sendai Study Registry Session Title: Hypertension and Aging and Cerebrovascular Disease and Stroke
Background: Hyperaldosteronism is associated with the risk of cardio-and cerebrovascular events (CVE) that is independent of blood pressure levels and Primary aldosteronism (PA) display a higher risk of CVE compared with essential hypertension (EH).Objective: Our objective was to elucidate the prevalence of symptomatic stroke in PA patients and to characterize their clinical features.Design and Setting: This was a retrospective cross-sectional single center study (PA Sendai Study registry) between 2007 and 2016 in Japan.Patient: 807 patients with PA were registered and analyzed. The all patients were performed adrenal veno...

Analysis of outcome at discharge after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage in Japan according to the Japanese stroke databank
AbstractThe outcomes at discharge for ruptured cerebral aneurysms after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) were investigated using data from the Japanese stroke databank. Among 101,165 patients with acute stroke registered between 2000 and 2013, 4693 patients had SAH caused by ruptured saccular aneurysm. Of these, 3593 patients (1140 men and 2453 women; mean age 61.3  ± 13.7 years) were treated by surgical clipping (SC) and/or endovascular coiling (EC). The outcomes of modified Rankin scale (mRS) at discharge were compared between the SC and EC groups. There were 2666 cases in the SC group, 881 cases in the EC group, and 46...

Teaching NeuroImages: Artery of Percheron aneurysm masquerading as ICH spot sign
A 50-year-old Japanese woman presented with left thalamic intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). CT angiography demonstrated an ICH spot sign and intracranial vasculopathy consistent with Moyamoya disease (figure 1). Conventional angiography demonstrated that the spot sign was actually a pseudoaneurysm arising from the artery of Percheron (figure 2). Intracranial aneurysms may complicate Moyamoya disease and occur at the circle of Willis, distal peripheral arteries, or Moyamoya vessels at a ratio of 3:1:1.1 Aneurysms in thalamo-perforating arteries are rare2 and an artery of Percheron aneurysm in Moyamoya disease has not been rep...

Effects of Smoking on Ischemic Stroke, Intracranial Hemorrhage, and Coronary Artery Events in Japanese Patients With Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation.
Authors: Suzuki S, Otsuka T, Sagara K, Semba H, Kano H, Matsuno S, Takai H, Kato Y, Uejima T, Oikawa Y, Nagashima K, Kirigaya H, Yajima J, Kunihara T, Sawada H, Aizawa T, Yamashita T Abstract The effects of smoking on the prognosis of non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) patients are unclear. The Shinken Database 2004-11 (n = 17,517) includes all new patients visiting the Cardiovascular Institute between June 2004 and March 2012. Among these cases, 2,102 NVAF patients were identified. The effects of smoking on ischemic stroke (IS), intracranial hemorrhage (ICH), and coronary artery events including percutaneous c...

Impact of financial incentives for inter-provider care coordination on health-care resource utilization among elderly acute stroke patients
ConclusionsOur findings suggest that a payment system for care coordination is inappropriate since it was not associated with a reduction in overall health-care resource utilization. Further, health-care system reform is necessary to improve care continuity across multiple health-care institutions in Japan.

Japanese Multicenter Outcomes With the HeartMate II Left Ventricular Assist Device in Patients With Small Body Surface Area.
CONCLUSIONS: Results for HMII LVAD as BTT in the post-approval era showed excellent survival and functional capacity improvement. Of particular interest to the Japanese patient population are the excellent results in patients with small BSA. PMID: 27373233 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Risk of Intracranial Hemorrhage in Japanese Patients with Acute Large Vessel Occlusion; subanalysis of the RESCUE-Japan registry
Recanalization therapies such as intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) or endovascular treatment (EVT) improve acute ischemic stroke outcomes; however, they carry the risk of intracranial hemorrhage (ICH). The present study assessed the frequency and predictive factor of ICH in Japanese patients with acute large vessel occlusion.

Aneurysm location and clipping versus coiling for development of secondary normal-pressure hydrocephalus after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage: Japanese Stroke DataBank.
CONCLUSIONS Patients with low-grade SAH caused by a ruptured MCA aneurysm had a low risk for the development of sNPH. In contrast, patients with high-grade SAH caused by a ruptured ACA aneurysm had a higher risk for sNPH. Endovascular coiling might confer a lower risk of developing sNPH than microsurgical clipping. Combined Effect of Blood Pressure and Total Cholesterol Levels on Long-Term Risks of Subtypes of Cardiovascular Death: Evidence for Cardiovascular Prevention From Observational Cohorts in Japan Epidemiology/Population
No large-scale, longitudinal studies have examined the combined effects of blood pressure (BP) and total cholesterol levels on long-term risks for subtypes of cardiovascular death in an Asian population. To investigate these relationships, a meta-analysis of individual participant data, which included 73 916 Japanese subjects (age, 57.7 years; men, 41.1%) from 11 cohorts, was conducted. During a mean follow-up of 15.0 years, deaths from coronary heart disease, ischemic stroke, and intraparenchymal hemorrhage occurred in 770, 724, and 345 cases, respectively. Cohort-stratified Cox proportional hazard models were used. After...

Higher Mortality Due to Intracerebral Hemorrhage in Dialysis Patients: A Comparison with the General Population in Japan
Abstract Cerebrovascular diseases, including intracerebral hemorrhage, cerebral infarction, and subarachnoid hemorrhage, remain prevalent causes of morbidity and mortality among dialysis patients. Their mortality rate for cerebrovascular diseases is roughly three times higher than that in the general population. However, whether mortality rates for all subtypes of cerebrovascular diseases are equally higher has not been evaluated. The aim of this study was to determine the mortality rate for each stroke subtype, comparing dialysis patients and the general population in Japan. We used mortality data reported by the Japanese...

Efficacy of Endovascular Revascularization in Elderly Patients with Acute Large Vessel Occlusion: Analysis from the RESCUE-Japan Retrospective Nationwide Survey
Conclusions: The elderly population could achieve favorable outcomes comparable to the nonelderly population, especially when they achieve any recanalization by EVT. Elderly patients should not be excluded from recanalization therapy with EVT because of age.
