Effects of Smoking on Ischemic Stroke, Intracranial Hemorrhage, and Coronary Artery Events in Japanese Patients With Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation. Int Heart J. 2017 Jul 13;: Authors: Suzuki S, Otsuka T, Sagara K, Semba H, Kano H, Matsuno S, Takai H, Kato Y, Uejima T, Oikawa Y, Nagashima K, Kirigaya H, Yajima J, Kunihara T, Sawada H, Aizawa T, Yamashita T Abstract The effects of smoking on the prognosis of non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) patients are unclear. The Shinken Database 2004-11 (n = 17,517) includes all new patients visiting the Cardiovascular Institute between June 2004 and March 2012. Among these cases, 2,102 NVAF patients were identified. The effects of smoking on ischemic stroke (IS), intracranial hemorrhage (ICH), and coronary artery events including percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and acute coronary syndrome (ACS) were analyzed. Smokers were younger and had lower risk profiles compared with non-smokers. A similar tendency was observed between current and former smokers. In contrast, patients with high tobacco consumption were older and had higher risk profiles, including uncontrolled hypertension, compared with those with low tobacco consumption. In 8,159 patient-years, IS, ICH, PCI, and ACS occurred at rates of 7.7, 2.7, 12.4, and 3.0 per 1000 patient-years. In multivariate Cox regression analysis, smoking was not significantly associated with any adverse event. However, different effects of smoking were observed when s...

This study aimed to explore the relationship between toe flexor strength and the daily activity levels in 56 Japanese older women aged between 70 and 88 years. The activity levels were measured as the average number of steps/day using a pedometer and the life space assessment (LSA) scores. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare toe flexor muscle strength and the LSA scores between those with fewer than and more than 6,000 steps/day. Spearman's correlation coefficient was used to investigate the relationship between toe grip strength according to age and each variable. The LSA scores were significantly higher in t...

Publication date: December 2020Source: Japanese Dental Science Review, Volume 56, Issue 1Author(s): Eleana Kontonasaki, Panagiotis Giasimakopoulos, Athanasios E. RigosAbstractNew zirconia compositions with optimized esthetic properties have emerged due to the fast-growing technology in zirconia manufacturing. However, the large variety of commercial products and synthesis routes, make impossible to include all of them under the general term of “monolithic zirconia ceramics”. Ultra- or high translucent monolithic formulations contain 3–8 mol% yttria, which results in materials with completely differen...

CONCLUSIONS: in Mexico, there is a very low prevalence of PI-IBS in patients from a tertiary-referral center. However, it varies according to the surrogate-criteria used. The later needs to be taken into account when performing PI-IBS studies. PMID: 31718206 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

CONCLUSION: Men with rectal prolapse were younger, healthier, and had relatively better anorectal function than women. The Delorme-Thiersch operation in men promoted lower recurrence rates and was advantageous in preserving the fertility of young patients, but the incidence of complications was also higher in men. Adequate counseling and preparation for the possibility of complications are needed. PMID: 31726002 [PubMed]

Conclusion: In ischemic stroke or TIA patients with platelet count within normal range, platelet count may be a qualified predictor for long-term recurrent stroke, mortality, and poor functional outcome. Introduction Platelets exert a critical role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerotic complications of cardio-cerebrovascular disease, contributing to thrombus formation, and embolism (1, 2). Previous literature reported that platelets of various size and density are produced by megakaryocytes of different size and stages of maturation in different clinical conditions, suggesting various platelet patterns in differen...
