Impact of acute symptomatic seizures and their management on patient-reported outcomes after stroke
The objective of our study is to evaluate the association between PROMs and ASyS and ASMs following stroke.METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of all stroke patients who underwent inpatient continuous EEG (cEEG) monitoring performed due to suspected ASyS, including the ones with observed convulsive ASyS, from 04/01/2012 to 03/31/2018, who completed PROMs within 6 months of hospital discharge. Patient-reported outcome measures, including one Neuro-QoL and six PROMIS v1.0 domain scales, were completed by patients as the standard of care in ambulatory stroke clinics. Since ASMs are sometimes used without clearl...

Alternative medicine therapies in neurological disorders: Prevalence, reasons and associated factors. A systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of CAM use in neurological diseases is highly variable (16%-100%); the most used type of CAM was biological therapies and the associated factors were female sex, age between 40 and 50 years old and high socioeconomic level.PMID:36805318 | DOI:10.1016/j.ctim.2023.102932

Dietary energy restriction in  neurological diseases: what’s new?
AbstractEnergy-restricted diet is a specific dietary regimen, including the continuous energy-restricted diet and the intermittent energy-restricted diet. It has been proven effective not only to reduce weight and extend the lifespan in animal models, but also to regulate the development and progression of various neurological diseases such as epilepsy, cerebrovascular diseases (stroke), neurodegenerative disorders (Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease) and autoimmune diseases (multiple sclerosis). However, the mechanism in this field is still not clear and a systematic neurological summary is still missing. In this...

Clinical features of epileptic seizures in patients with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes
Mitochondrial encephalomyopathy is a complex group of inherited disease with multisystem involvement that have mitochondrial respiratory chain dysfunction. Mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) is one of the most common well-defined mitochondrial encephalomyopathies, with a frequency of 1:6000 [1,2]. Although the most common mutation in MELAS is in the MT-TL1 gene encoding tRNALeu(UUR), known as adenine to guanine transition at nucleotide 3243 (m.3243A>G) [3,4], multiple other mutations in MELAS have been reported in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and nuclear DNA (nDNA) such as mutat...

Training and teaching of vagus nerve stimulation surgery: worldwide survey and future perspectives
CONCLUSIONS: VNS surgery should be mastered by actively participating in dedicated practical training courses and by individual mentoring during actual surgery, which is still the best way to learn. This study highlights the need for a formal training course and possible specific accreditation.PMID:36775121 | DOI:10.1016/j.neuchi.2023.101420
