Phagocytosis by macrophages promotes pancreatic β cell mass reduction after parturition in mice
Dev Cell. 2023 Aug 19:S1534-5807(23)00398-2. doi: 10.1016/j.devcel.2023.08.002. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTElucidating the mechanism(s) modulating appropriate tissue size is a critical biological issue. Pancreatic β cells increase during pregnancy via cellular proliferation, but how β cells promptly decrease to the original amount after parturition remains unclear. Herein, we demonstrate the role and mechanism of macrophage accumulation in this process. In the final stage of pregnancy, HTR1D signaling upregulates murine β cell CXCL10, thereby promoting macrophage accumulation in pancreatic islets via the CXCL10-CXCR3...

Restoring prefrontal cortical excitation-inhibition balance with cannabidiol ameliorates neurobehavioral abnormalities in a mouse model of neurodevelopmental disorders
Neuropharmacology. 2023 Sep 14;240:109715. doi: 10.1016/j.neuropharm.2023.109715. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMaternal immune activation (MIA) resulting from viral infections during pregnancy is linked to increased rates of neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring. However, the mechanisms underlying MIA-induced neurobehavioral abnormalities remain unclear. Here, we used a poly (I:C)-induced MIA mouse model to demonstrate the presence of multiple behavioral deficits in male offspring. Through RNA sequencing (RNA-seq), we identified significant upregulation of genes involved in axonogenesis, synaptogenesis, and glutamater...

Obstetric care for environmental migrants
ConclusionMaternity healthcare providers are likely to provide care for environmental migrants over the coming years. Environmental disasters and migration as individual factors have complex effects on perinatal health, and environmental migrants may be at risk of specific perinatal complications. Obstetricians and maternity healthcare workers should be aware of these challenges and appreciate the individualised and specialised care that these patients require.

Low-Dose Remifentanil in Preterm Cesarean Section with General Anesthesia: A Randomized Controlled Trial
CONCLUSIONS: The use of a low dose of remifentanil before cord clamping for a Cesarean section appears to be safe both for the mother and the preterm newborn, but it does not improve maternal or neonatal outcomes.CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT02029898.PMID:37713021 | DOI:10.1007/s40272-023-00591-w

Exploring the association of parity and its interaction with history of preterm delivery on gestational duration
CONCLUSION: Non-shared factors across a mother's pregnancies highlight parity's importance to gain insight into the mechanisms governing the timing of delivery.PMID:37714417 | DOI:10.1016/j.annepidem.2023.09.004

Paradoxes in the cultural doula concept for migrant women: Implications for gender-inclusive care versus migrant-friendly maternity care
CONCLUSIONS: The cultural doula concept includes paradoxes in relation to gender equality and diversity. Rather than empowering migrant women, the cultural doula concept is related to gendered patterns of low-educated, underpaid care work. Labour support interventions including migrant women's social network and intensified partner involvement would be more in line with Swedish policies of gender equality, shared parenting and cultural sensitivity when needed. However, doulas may be an imperfect solution for women lacking partners or social networks, for example, newly arrived migrant women, if no support is to be found wi...

Follicular fluid advanced glycation end products in assisted reproduction: a systematic review
Clin Chim Acta. 2023 Sep 13:117560. doi: 10.1016/j.cca.2023.117560. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFollicular fluid (FF) advanced glycation end products (AGEs) have been associated with low oocyte quality and number, low fertilization rate, impaired embryonic development and low pregnancy rate. These findings are especially relevant in women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), ie, assisted reproductive technology (ART). A systematic literature search was conducted to examine various AGEs including pentosidine, carboxymethyl-lysine (CML), methylglyoxal 5-hydro-5-methylimidazol...

A cross-sectional survey of women's views and preferences for preterm birth screening and treatment
CONCLUSION: PTB is an important healthcare priority for pregnant women in Ireland. However, women require more information, counselling and reassurance about the utility and safety of TVUS in PSCs.PMID:37713943 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejogrb.2023.09.005

The question of the early diagnosis of asymptomatic and subpatent malaria in pregnancy: Implications for diagnostic tools in a malaria endemic area
CONCLUSIONS: Average age of enrolled women was 28.8 years and mean gestational age was 21.0 weeks. The parasite positivity rates were 4.3%, 8.8% and 25.0% for microscopy, mRDT and PCR at V1 and was 2.4%, 3.4% and 43.4% at delivery, respectively. Sensitivity for microscopy and mRDT was 11.2% and 30.3% respectively at V1, while specificity was 98.2% and 98.5%. At delivery, the sensitivity reduced to 1.6% and 4.9%; while specificity was 96.9% and 97.6% respectively. Only 2.3% cases correlated with all three diagnostic methods. Our data showed a decrease in sensitivity of the diagnostic methods as pregnancy progressed, which m...

Reference Intervals of Serum Iodine Concentration in Chinese Pregnant Women
Biol Trace Elem Res. 2023 Sep 15. doi: 10.1007/s12011-023-03859-x. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe study aims to establish trimester-specific reference ranges for serum iodine (SI) in Chinese pregnant women and explore its associations with maternal and infantile thyroid function. Apparently healthy pregnant women were enrolled during their first antenatal visit. Fasting venous and spot urine samples were collected for determining serum and urinary iodine (UI) levels by a validated inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Serum free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4), thyrotropin (TSH), and neonatal TSH le...
