Association between weight loss agents and elevated liver enzymes: a population-based cross-sectional study
This study aimed to investigate the associations between weight loss agents and elevated liver enzymes at the population-level. We conducted a cross-sectional study using Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) data from 2013 to 2019. This study included 36,259 participants over 20 years of age who completed the questionnaire and had no history of hepatitis, cancer, or renal failure. In these participants, we analyzed associations between weight loss agents and elevated liver enzymes by constructing multiple logistic regression models with adjustment for confounding factors and stratified by sex, a...

Hyperoside attenuates pyrrolizidine alkaloids-induced liver injury by ameliorating TFEB-mediated mitochondrial dysfunction
In conclusion, Hyp can activate the TFEB-mediated autophagy-lysosomal pathway and mitochondrial biogenesis through inhibition of mTORC1 activity, alleviating the liver injury induced by PAs, thus suggesting the potential value of Hyp in the treatment of PA-induced hepatotoxicity.PMID:37733287 | DOI:10.1007/s12272-023-01460-3

Pathophysiology of diabetic hepatopathy and molecular mechanisms underlying the hepatoprotective effects of phytochemicals
Biomed Pharmacother. 2023 Sep 19;167:115502. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2023.115502. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPatients with diabetes are at risk for liver disorders including glycogen hepatopathy, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, and hepatic fibrosis. The pathophysiological mechanisms behind diabetic hepatopathy are complex, some of them include fatty acid accumulation, increased reactive oxygen species, increased advanced glycation end-products, hyperactivity of polyol pathways, increased apoptosis and necrosis, and promotion of fibrosis. A growing number of studies have shown that herbal extracts and their a...

Novel antidepressant mechanism of hypericin: Role of connexin 43-based gap junctions
Biomed Pharmacother. 2023 Sep 19;167:115545. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2023.115545. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHypericin is widely utilized for its precise antidepressant properties, but its exact antidepressant mechanism remains unclear. Gap junctions, which were predominantly expressed in astrocytes in the central nervous system, are concerned with the pathogenesis of depression. However, the role of hypericin in gap junctional dysfunction in depression has rarely been investigated. Here, we found that gap junctions were ultra-structurally broadened in the chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) rat model of depression, while ...

The composition, pharmacological effects, related mechanisms and drug delivery of alkaloids from Corydalis yanhusuo
Biomed Pharmacother. 2023 Sep 18;167:115511. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2023.115511. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCorydalis yanhusuo W. T. Wang, also known as yanhusuo, yuanhu, yanhu and xuanhu, is one of the herb components of many Chinese Traditional Medicine prescriptions such as Jin Ling Zi San and Yuanhu-Zhitong priscription. C. yanhusuo was traditionally used to relieve pain and motivate blood and Qi circulation. Now there has been growing interest in pharmacological effects of alkaloids, the main bioactive components of C. yanhusuo. Eighty-four alkaloids isolated from C. yanhusuo are its important bioactive components a...

Characterization and comparison of cardiomyocyte protection activities of non-starch polysaccharides from six ginseng root herbal medicines
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Sep 18;253(Pt 3):126994. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126994. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGinseng is rich of polysaccharides, however, the evidence supporting polysaccharides to distinguish various ginseng species is rarely reported. Focusing on six root ginseng (e.g., Panax ginseng-PG, P. quinquefolius-PQ, P. notoginseng-PN, red ginseng-RG, P. japonicus-PJ, and P. japonicus var. major-PJM), the contained non-starch polysaccharides (NPs) were structurally characterized and compared by both the chemical and biological evaluation. Holistic fingerprinting at three levels (the NPs and the acid hydro...

Study on the Therapeutic Effect of Coconut Oil Extracts as An Alternative Medicinal Plant in < em > Cryptosporidium < /em > Infected Mice
CONCLUSION: The present study has opened fresh avenues for development of natural therapy like coconut oil extracts, which have a potential therapeutic efficacy against Cryptosporidiosis. That was confirmed by different methodologies, parasitological examination, histopathological examination, and immunohistochemical assays. It paves the way for being a promising anti-parasitic agent for infection eradication. However, further studies are still required to gain more knowledge about different coconut extracts in order to reach the best treatment efficacy.PMID:37724361 | DOI:10.4274/tpd.galenos.2023.22932

The role of NLRP3 inflammasome in sepsis: A potential therapeutic target
Int Immunopharmacol. 2023 Feb;115:109697. doi: 10.1016/j.intimp.2023.109697. Epub 2023 Jan 20.ABSTRACTSepsis is the host immune imbalance following infection and leads to organ dysfunction, with highly complicated pathophysiology. To date, sepsis still lacks effective therapies with high mortality rates. Recently, numerous studies have highlighted the potential of NLRP3 inflammasome as a therapeutic target during sepsis. NLRP3 inflammasome is a protein complex that could induce the activation of caspase-1 and the following release of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and IL-18. It was demonstrated that NLRP3 inflam...
