Detailed investigation and influence of oxidation degree on synthesis, characterization and antibacterial activity of β- cyclodextrin
Carbohydr Res. 2023 Sep 9;533:108936. doi: 10.1016/j.carres.2023.108936. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOxidation of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) using varying molar ratios of sodium periodate (NaIO4) was investigated in detail on synthesis, characterization and antibacterial property. Synthesis and characterization results showed that Oxidized β-cyclodextrins (OX-β-CDs) were obtained and aldehyde (CHO) groups were successfully introduced. Our results demonstrated that aldehyde content and yield increased with increasing NaIO4 molar amount. However, the structure of β-CD was degraded as a result of glycosidic ring opening wit...

3D interconnected porous PMMA scaffold integrating with advanced nanostructured CaP-based biomaterials for rapid bone repair and regeneration
J Mech Behav Biomed Mater. 2023 Sep 7;147:106106. doi: 10.1016/j.jmbbm.2023.106106. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBioactive scaffolds with polymer and nanostructured bioactive glass-based composites are promising materials for regenerative applications in consequence of close mimics of natural bone composition. Poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) is a highly preferred thermoplastic polymer for orthopedic applications as it has good biocompatibility. Different kinds of bioactive, biodegradable as well as biocompatible biomaterial composites such as Bioglass (BG), Hydroxyapatite (Hap), and Tricalcium phosphate (TCP) can be integ...

SGLT2 and SGLT1 inhibitors suppress the activities of the RVLM neurons in newborn Wistar rats
In this study, we examined the effects of SGLT2 and SGLT1 inhibitors on the bulbospinal neurons of the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM). To investigate whether bulbospinal RVLM neurons are sensitive to SGLT2 and SGLT1 inhibitors, we examined the changes in the neuronal membrane potentials (MPs) of these neurons using the whole-cell patch-clamp technique during superfusion of the cells with the SGLT2 and SGLT1 inhibitors. A brainstem-spinal cord preparation was used for the experiments. Our results showed that superfusion of the RVLM neurons with SGLT2 and SGLT1 inhibitor solutions induced hyperpolarization of the neuro...

Enrichment of sialic acid-containing casein glycomacropeptide in protein hydrolysates using phenylboronic acid-functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles
Talanta. 2023 Sep 9;267:125174. doi: 10.1016/j.talanta.2023.125174. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGlycomacropeptide (GMP) is a bioactive peptide of high value, rich in glycosylation sites and with physiological and dietary therapeutic value. The enrichment and detection of GMP facilitates the accurate quantification and the identification of adulteration of GMP in food products. In GMP, sialic acid is an abundant glycosyl group and is mainly located at the end of the sugar chain. Here, we propose a novel GMP enrichment strategy based on the affinity of sialic acid for phenylboronic acid groups that shift with environmental...

Bulk industrial production of sustainable cellulosic printing fabric using agricultural waste to reduce the impact of climate change
This study represents a significant contribution to sustainable textile production, as tamarind agriculture waste was used as a raw material, which is an environmentally friendly alternative of sodium alginate that reduces the wastewater load. Additionally, PEG-400 was utilized as a nitrogen-free solubilizing moisture management substitution of urea for printing, while TCEA dissociated at high temperature to make alkaline pH during curing of the printed fabric to replace sodium bicarbonate. This research is a novel contribution to the printing industry, as these three constituents have not been previously used together oth...

Effects of aconitine on the respiratory activity of brainstem-spinal cord preparations isolated from newborn rats
Pflugers Arch. 2023 Sep 14. doi: 10.1007/s00424-023-02857-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAconitine is a sodium channel opener, but its effects on the respiratory center are not well understood. We investigated the dose-dependent effects of aconitine on central respiratory activity in brainstem-spinal cord preparations isolated from newborn rats. Bath application of 0.5-5 μM aconitine caused an increase in respiratory rhythm and decrease in the inspiratory burst amplitude of the fourth cervical ventral root (C4). Separate application of aconitine revealed that medullary neurons were responsible for the respiratory rhythm...

Isometric myography is a feasible method to identify and quantify endothelial dysfunction in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease
Am J Vet Res. 2023 Sep 18:1-7. doi: 10.2460/ajvr.23.06.0136. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOBJECTIVE: To assess the feasibility of isometric myography in pet dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) to determine its use in quantifying endothelial dysfunction.ANIMALS: 9 dogs euthanized for medical reasons.METHODS: Femoral, renal, and mesenteric arteries were collected postmortem and stored in physiological saline solution at 4 °C for myography. Mitral valves were scored for myxomatous degeneration (grades 1 to 4). Sections of arteries were mounted in wells, immersed in physiological saline solution perfused with 95...

Self-template sacrifice and in situ oxidation of a constructed hollow MnO < sub > 2 < /sub > nanozymes for smartphone-assisted colorimetric detection of liver function biomarkers
Anal Chim Acta. 2023 Oct 16;1278:341744. doi: 10.1016/j.aca.2023.341744. Epub 2023 Aug 21.ABSTRACTLiver function tests play a vital role in accurately diagnosing liver diseases, monitoring treatment outcomes, and assessing liver damage severity. Here, we introduce a novel approach to develop a smartphone-assisted portable colorimetric sensor for rapid detection of three liver function biomarkers: aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). This sensor is based on the inherent enzyme-like activities of hollow MnO2 (H-MnO2). The H-MnO2 is synthesized via a self-template s...
