Potential protective effects of the water-soluble Chinese propolis on experimental ulcerative colitis
CONCLUSION: WSP downregulates OS by enhancing the function of endogenous antioxidant enzymes like SOD and GSH-Px, that inhibit neutrophil activity, as well as diminish pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-ɑ, IL-6, and IL-9, along with mechanisms that attenuate intestinal inflammation in UC rat model.PMID:37679980 | PMC:PMC10465833 | DOI:10.19852/j.cnki.jtcm.20230727.002

Do SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists modulate differently the risk of stroke ? Discordance between randomised controlled trials and observational studies
Diabetes Metab. 2023 Sep 5:101474. doi: 10.1016/j.diabet.2023.101474. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStroke represents a major burden in patients with type 2 diabetes, yet this cerebrovascular complication has been less carefully investigated than the risk of cardiovascular mortality, heart failure and renal disease. Some data suggested that glucagon peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) exert a better protection against stroke than sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2is). However, this conclusion was derived from indirect comparisons in absence of any head-to-head randomised controlled trial (RCT). The present...

Excessive dietary sodium intake augments long-term risk of atrial fibrillation in older adults with hyperglycemia: A community-based prospective cohort study
CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that excessive sodium intake independently enhances the risk of new-onset AF among patients with hyperglycemia. A sodium-restricted diet may perhaps result in a multiplier effect on reducing the risk of new-onset AF.PMID:37678758 | DOI:10.1016/j.diabet.2023.101475

Sodium First Approach, to Reset Our Mind for Improving Management of Sodium, Water, Volume and Pressure in Hemodialysis Patients, and to Reduce Cardiovascular Burden and Improve Outcomes
Front Nephrol. 2022 Jul 7;2:935388. doi: 10.3389/fneph.2022.935388. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTNew physiologic findings related to sodium homeostasis and pathophysiologic associations require a new vision for sodium, fluid and blood pressure management in dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease patients. The traditional dry weight probing approach that has prevailed for many years must be reviewed in light of these findings and enriched by availability of new tools for monitoring and handling sodium and water imbalances. A comprehensive and integrated approach is needed to improve further cardiac health in hemodialysis (HD...

Patient-specific iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes reveal aberrant activation of Wnt/ β-catenin signaling in SCN5A-related Brugada syndrome
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that aberrant activation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling contributes to the pathogenesis of SCN5A-related BrS and point to Wnt/β-catenin as a potential therapeutic target.PMID:37679791 | DOI:10.1186/s13287-023-03477-3

Employing the sustained-release properties of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles to reveal a novel mechanism of sodium-hydrogen exchanger 1 in neuropathic pain
Transl Res. 2023 Sep 5:S1931-5244(23)00143-3. doi: 10.1016/j.trsl.2023.09.003. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNeuropathic pain is caused by injury or disease of the somatosensory system, and its course is usually chronic. Several studies have been dedicated to investigating neuropathic pain-related targets; however, little attention has been paid to the persistent alterations that these targets, some of which may be crucial to the pathophysiology of neuropathic pain. The present study aimed to identify potential targets that may play a crucial role in neuropathic pain and validate their long-term impact. Through bioinformat...

Effect of canagliflozin in non-diabetic obese patients with albuminuria: A  randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial
CONCLUSION: Canagliflozin 100 mg daily was well tolerated but did not significantly reduce UACR in non-diabetic obese patients with microalbuminuria. However, a significant temporary decline in eGFR might reflect a subtle reduction in glomerular hyperfiltration.PMID:37675488 | DOI:10.5414/CN111143

Effects of Charged Surfactants on Interfacial Water Structure and Macroscopic Properties of the Air-Water Interface
Chemphyschem. 2023 Sep 7:e202300062. doi: 10.1002/cphc.202300062. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSurfactants are used to control the macroscopic properties of air-water interfaces. However, the link between the molecular structure of surfactant adsorption and macroscopic properties is poorly understood. Using sum-frequency generation spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulation, we show that two ionic surfactants (dodecyl trimethylammonium bromide and sodium dodecyl sulphate) with the same carbon chain lengths and head group charge magnitude (but different signs) can interact and reorient interfacial water molecules diffe...
