Bacterial respiratory inhibition triggers dispersal of < em > Pseudomonas aeruginosa < /em > biofilms
Appl Environ Microbiol. 2023 Sep 20:e0110123. doi: 10.1128/aem.01101-23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPseudomonas aeruginosa grows as a biofilm under many environmental conditions, and the bacterium can disperse from biofilms via highly regulated, dynamic processes. However, physiologic triggers of biofilm dispersal remain poorly understood. Based on prior literature describing dispersal triggered by forms of starvation, we tested bacterial respiratory inhibitors for biofilm dispersal in two models resembling chronic airway infections. Our underlying hypothesis was that respiratory inhibitors could serve as a model for th...

Effects of < em > in utero < /em > exposure to fluoxetine on the gastrointestinal tract of rat offspring
Am J Physiol Gastrointest Liver Physiol. 2023 Sep 19. doi: 10.1152/ajpgi.00223.2022. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPerinatal exposure to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) has been shown to disrupt the development of serotonergic signaling pathways. Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) signaling is critical for gastrointestinal homeostasis; changes in 5-HT expression and regulation have been associated with gastrointestinal diseases of motility and inflammation. We tested the hypothesis that perinatal exposure to the SSRI, fluoxetine, can influence the development of the gastrointestinal tract in exposed offs...

Acetate Abates Arsenic-Induced Male Reproductive Toxicity by Suppressing HDAC and Uric Acid-Driven Oxido-inflammatory NFkB/iNOS/NO Response in Rats
This study investigated the impact of acetate on arsenic-induced male reproductive toxicity. Forty eight adult male Wistar rats were allotted into any of these four groups (n = 12 rats per group): vehicle-treated, sodium acetate-treated, arsenic-exposed, and arsenic-exposed + sodium acetate-treated. The results revealed that arsenic exposure prolonged the latencies of mount, intromission, and ejaculation and reduced the frequencies of mount, intromission, and ejaculation, as well as mating and fertility indices, litter size and weight, anogenital distance, anogenital index, and survival rate in male F1 offspring at weaning...

Impacts of Some Trace Metals in Cyprinus carpio (Linnaeus,  1758) and Tor soro (Valenciennes, 1842) on Human Health
Biol Trace Elem Res. 2023 Sep 19. doi: 10.1007/s12011-023-03852-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlthough fish are rich sources of various trace metals in their bodies, when these metals exceed health safety limits, it becomes a global concern. Fish exposed to trace metal pollution in their aquatic ecosystems can lead to bioaccumulation and transfer to consumers. Monitoring trace metal contamination of fish food is crucial because they can reach humans through the aquatic food chain, resulting in health problems. Therefore, a first attempt was made for the analysis of trace metals in two cyprinid fish species, namely Cypri...

How to optimize the use of diuretics in patients with heart failure?
Kardiol Pol. 2023 Sep 18. doi: 10.33963/v.kp.97315. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTConsidering the pathophysiology and the clinical presentation of heart failure, the use of diuretics or drugs with diuretic properties are indispensable for an adequate management of heart failure patients. However, in clinical practice, fluid expansion is often undiagnosed and diuretic therapy is not always adequately titrated. Today, several drug classes with diuretic properties are available in addition to classical thiazides, thiazide-like and loop diuretics. The purpose of this short review is to discuss the different ways to optimize di...

Principles of the pharmacology of local anesthetics
Schmerz. 2023 Sep 18. doi: 10.1007/s00482-023-00751-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe development of local anesthetics revolutionized the performance of painful interventions. Local anesthetics have an effect on voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve fibers and modulate the conduction of impulses. With respect to the chemical structure, local anesthetics can be divided into amide and ester types. The structural differences of local anesthetics have an influence on the duration of action, the degradation pathways and specific side effects. Severe adverse events include cardiotoxicity and neurotoxicity. In addition to bas...

2023 American Heart Association Focused Update on the Management of Patients With Cardiac Arrest or Life-Threatening Toxicity Due to Poisoning: An Update to the American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care
Circulation. 2023 Sep 18. doi: 10.1161/CIR.0000000000001161. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn this focused update, the American Heart Association provides updated guidance for resuscitation of patients with cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, and refractory shock due to poisoning. Based on structured evidence reviews, guidelines are provided for the treatment of critical poisoning from benzodiazepines, β-adrenergic receptor antagonists (also known as β-blockers), L-type calcium channel antagonists (commonly called calcium channel blockers), cocaine, cyanide, digoxin and related cardiac glycosides, local anesthetics, meth...
