Tert-Butyl Hydroperoxide induces Ferroptosis of Bone Mesenchymal Stem cells by repressing the Prominin2/BACH1/ROS axis
CONCLUSION: Our findings revealed a mechanism that the prominin2/BACH1/ROS axis participates in BMSCs ferroptosis and the strengthening of this axis is promising to subsist BMSCs after explantation.PMID:37721001 | DOI:10.1152/ajpcell.00224.2023

Low-cost materials for swine wastewater treatment using adsorption and Fenton's process
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Sep 18. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29677-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUntreated swine wastewater (SW) discharge leads to serious consequences such as water quality decreasing related to eutrophication and proliferation of harmful algae containing cyanotoxins, which can cause acute intoxication in humans. The use of untreated pig farming effluent as fertilizer can lead to the accumulation of polluting compounds. Biological treatments can degrade organic matter but have the disadvantage of requiring large areas and high retention times and demonstrating low efficiencies in the degradation of...

Hepcidin and its multiple partners: Complex regulation of iron metabolism in health and disease
Vitam Horm. 2023;123:249-284. doi: 10.1016/bs.vh.2023.03.001. Epub 2023 Mar 30.ABSTRACTThe peptide hormone hepcidin is central to the regulation of iron metabolism, influencing the movement of iron into the circulation and determining total body iron stores. Its effect on a cellular level involves binding ferroportin, the main iron export protein, preventing iron egress and leading to iron sequestration within ferroportin-expressing cells. Hepcidin expression is enhanced by iron loading and inflammation and suppressed by erythropoietic stimulation. Aberrantly increased hepcidin leads to systemic iron deficiency and/or iron...

Melatonin alleviates early brain injury by inhibiting the NRF2-mediated ferroptosis pathway after subarachnoid hemorrhage
Free Radic Biol Med. 2023 Sep 15:S0891-5849(23)00636-6. doi: 10.1016/j.freeradbiomed.2023.09.012. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFerroptosis is a novel form of cell death that plays a critical role in the pathological and physiological processes of early brain injury following subarachnoid hemorrhage. Melatonin, as the most potent endogenous antioxidant, has shown strong protective effects against pathological changes following subarachnoid hemorrhage, but its impact on ferroptosis induced by subarachnoid hemorrhage remains unexplored. In our study, we established a subarachnoid hemorrhage model in male SD rats. We found th...

Hydroxyl radical generations form the physiologically relevant Fenton-like reactions
Free Radic Biol Med. 2023 Sep 15:S0891-5849(23)00637-8. doi: 10.1016/j.freeradbiomed.2023.09.013. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIron(II) species can participate in the Fenton and Fenton-like reactions to generate the hydroxyl radical that can oxidatively damage biomolecules and induce oxidative stress in biological systems. Many diseases, including neurodegeneration, cardiovascular disease and cancer, are associated with oxidative stress. However, it is proposed recently that hydroxyl radical would not be generated from the Fenton reaction under physiological conditions and thus would not cause oxidative stress in biologic...

Iron chelation prevents nigrostriatal neurodegeneration in a chronic methamphetamine mice model
Neurotoxicology. 2023 Sep 15:S0161-813X(23)00122-5. doi: 10.1016/j.neuro.2023.09.006. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMethamphetamine (METH) has been established to selectively target and impair dopaminergic neurons through multiple pathways. Ferroptosis is a unique form of non-apoptotic cell death driven by cellular iron accumulation-induced lipid peroxidation. Nonetheless, it remains unclear whether METH can induce ferroptosis. In the present study, we sought to assess alterations in iron levels after chronic METH exposure and reveal the modulatory role of iron on METH-induced pathologies. Importantly, we demonstrated that...

Multimodal imaging of microstructural cerebral alterations and loss of synaptic density in Alzheimer's disease
Neurobiol Aging. 2023 Aug 9;132:24-35. doi: 10.1016/j.neurobiolaging.2023.08.001. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMultiple neuropathological events are involved in Alzheimer's disease (AD). The current study investigated the concurrence of neurodegeneration, increased iron content, atrophy, and demyelination in AD. Quantitative multiparameter magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) maps providing neuroimaging biomarkers for myelination and iron content along with synaptic density measurements using [18F] UCB-H PET were acquired in 24 AD and 19 Healthy controls (19 males). The whole brain voxel-wise group comparison revealed demyeli...

Ratiometrically electrochemical and colorimetric dual-mode detection of glyphosate based on 2D Cu-TCPP(Fe) NSs
Talanta. 2023 Sep 13;267:125207. doi: 10.1016/j.talanta.2023.125207. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn this work, a dual-signal output sensor was developed for the ratiometrically electrochemical and colorimetric detection of glyphosate (GLYP) based on the duplex nature of 2D Cu-TCPP(Fe) nanosheets (2D Cu-TCPP(Fe) NSs). Cu active center sites in 2D Cu-TCPP(Fe) NSs could transform into CuCl for signal amplification in the presence of chloride ions (Cl-), which dropped dramatically upon GLPY addition due to the strong interaction between GLYP and cuprous ion triggering the competitive reaction with the conversion of CuCl into...

Efficacy of a novel glioma therapy based on ferroptosis induced by layered double hydroxide loaded with simvastatin
In this study, folic acid (FA)-modified layered double hydroxide loaded with simvastatin (SIM), a ferroptosis drug, was used to prepare a novel ferroptosis nanodrug (FA-LDH@SIM). The prepared nanodrug improved the therapeutic effect of SIM on glioma. Compared with free SIM, FA-LDH@SIM showed greater cytotoxicity, significantly inhibited glioma cell proliferation, and significantly inhibited glioma invasion and migration ability. Furthermore, SIM could induce changes in certain ferroptosis indicators, including increased intracellular LPO, ROS and MDA level, decreased GSH production, increased divalent iron level, and chang...

Ecotoxicol Environ Saf. 2023 Sep 15;264:115477. doi: 10.1016/j.ecoenv.2023.115477. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDuring the development of nanotechnology, the production of many substances containing nanoparticles leads to the release of various nanoparticles into the environment, including the water ecosystem. The main goal of the current research was to study the ultrastructural characteristics of the entry and bioaccumulation of Fe3O4 nanoparticles in the small intestine of Cyprinus carpio (Linnaeus, 1758), as well as the pathomorphological changes in the fish organism. Two different doses (10 and 100 mg) of Fe3O4 nanop...
