Enhanced Adsorption of Hexavalent Chromium from Aqueous Solutions by Iron- manganese Modified Cedarwood Biochar: Synthesis, Performance, Mechanism, and Variables
Bull Environ Contam Toxicol. 2023 Sep 16;111(3):43. doi: 10.1007/s00128-023-03802-9.ABSTRACTThree modified biochar (Cunninghamia lanceolata) with iron and manganese elementals (FMBCs) were successfully prepared and used to remove hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from aqueous solutions. The biochar before and after decoration were characterized by advanced instruments. The adsorption capacities of modified biochar in different Cr(VI) (20 mg·L- 1, 1 mg·L- 1) solutions were 4868.28 mg·kg- 1 and 300 mg·kg- 1. The Cr(VI) removal was highest at pH 2. The possible adsorption was considered to be ion exchange adsorption, chemisorp...

Troubleshooting dioxins stack emissions in an industrial waste gas incinerator
In this study, monitoring campaign of International Toxic Equivalents for dioxins and furans (I-TEQDF), was carried out at pharmaceutical industrial waste incinerator to find a correlation between combustion parameters and feed composition with potential emission. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) shows that high values of dioxin emission correlate with short residence time of the flue gas in the furnace as well as low oxygen concentration. These operating conditions were further investigated, using COMSOL Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation to calculate the temperature profiles along the furnace. The results su...

Promoting short-chain fatty acids production from sewage sludge via acidogenic fermentation: Optimized operation factors and iron-based persulfate activation system
Chemosphere. 2023 Sep 13:140148. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.140148. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPromoting short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production and ensuring the stability of SCFAs-producing process are becoming the two major issues for popularizing the acidogenic fermentation (AF). The key controlling operating and influencing factors during anaerobic fermentation process were thoroughly reviewed to facilitate better process performance prediction and to optimize the process control of SCFAs promotion. The wide utilization of iron salt flocculants during wastewater treatment could result in iron accumulating in...

Electron Transfer Beyond the Outer Membrane: Putting Electrons to Rest
Annu Rev Microbiol. 2023 Sep 15;77:517-539. doi: 10.1146/annurev-micro-032221-023725.ABSTRACTExtracellular electron transfer (EET) is the physiological process that enables the reduction or oxidation of molecules and minerals beyond the surface of a microbial cell. The first bacteria characterized with this capability were Shewanella and Geobacter, both reported to couple their growth to the reduction of iron or manganese oxide minerals located extracellularly. A key difference between EET and nearly every other respiratory activity on Earth is the need to transfer electrons beyond the cell membrane. The past decade has re...

High-Performance Alkaline Seawater Electrolysis with Anomalous Chloride Promoted Oxygen Evolution Reaction
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2023 Sep 15:e202311674. doi: 10.1002/anie.202311674. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA highly selective and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst is the bottleneck for direct seawater splitting because of side reactions primarily caused by chloride ions (Cl-). Most studies about OER catalysts in seawater focus on the repulsion of the Cl- to reduce its negative effects. Herein, we demonstrate that the absorption of Cl- on the specific site of a popular OER electrocatalyst, nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH), does not have a significant negative impact; rather, it is benef...

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Sep 15. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29606-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Loktak Lake, a Ramsar site in Northeast India, is known for its rich biodiversity that includes a variety of macrophyte species, most of which have not been studied for their phytoremediation capacities and potential toxicity via consumption of the edible species. Therefore, a comprehensive assessment was conducted to evaluate the accumulation of selected heavy metals and nutrients in 10 dominant macrophyte species growing in Loktak Lake and to assess the potential health risks associated with consumption of the edib...
