Hypogonadism and Neurocognitive Outcomes among Childhood Cancer Survivors
CONCLUSION: Processing speed may be the most vulnerable neurocognitive domain associated with hypogonadism in survivors, while other domains were mainly impacted by cancer-related variables. Our findings support the need for further evaluation of the impact of sex hormone replacement therapy on neurocognitive function.PMID:38468563 | DOI:10.1093/ejendo/lvae027 (Source: European Journal of Endocrinology)

Exploring epigenetic strategies for the treatment of osteoporosis
Mol Biol Rep. 2024 Mar 8;51(1):398. doi: 10.1007/s11033-024-09353-4.ABSTRACTThe worldwide trend toward an aging population has resulted in a higher incidence of chronic conditions, such as osteoporosis. Osteoporosis, a prevalent skeletal disorder characterized by decreased bone mass and increased fracture risk, encompasses primary and secondary forms, each with distinct etiologies. Mechanistically, osteoporosis involves an imbalance between bone resorption by osteoclasts and bone formation by osteoblasts. Current pharmacological interventions for osteoporosis, such as bisphosphonates, denosumab, and teriparatide, aim to mo...

Effects of gender affirming hormone therapy with testosterone on coagulation and hematological parameters in transgender people assigned female at birth: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Hormone replacement therapy is associated with an increased thromboembolic risk. The effects of testosterone (T) on coagulation markers in people assigned female at birth (AFAB) under gender affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) are not well described. (Source: Thrombosis Research)

Prolame produces anxiolytic- and antidepressant-like effects in middle-aged female rats with less uterotrophic effects than 17 β-estradiol
This study aimed to identify the antidepressant- and anxiolytic-like effects of prolame and E2 (used as a reference estrogen treatment) in middle-aged female rats coursing with irregular cycles, in two different conditions: ovariectomized or gonadally intact. Results were compared with those from young adult ovariectomized rats. Prolame (60 or 120 μg/kg), 17β-estradiol (E2, 40 or 80 μg/kg), or vehicle were chronically administered, and their effects were evaluated in the elevated plus-maze, defensive burying behavior test, open field test, and forced swimming test. Uterotrophic actions were estimated by uterine weight r...

Renal dysfunction caused by severe hypothyroidism diagnosed by renal biopsy: a case report
We report the case of a 36-year-old male in whom renal dysfunction detected during a company health check-up was found to be caused by severe hypothyroidism. His serum creatinine levels showed poor results, but serum cystatin C levels were within the normal range. The physician thus prioritized serum cystatin C for assessing the patient ’s renal function, and concluded that his renal function was normal. He subsequently visited our hospital, aged 36 years, for a comprehensive examination. His serum creatinine level was 1.88 mg/dL and his serum cystatin C level was 0.75 mg/dL, indicating an unusual discrepancy between ...

Best Practices for Hormonal Contraception and Menopause Therapy in Women at Increased Risk for Breast Cancer
AbstractPurpose of ReviewThe present review critically assesses contemporary evidence characterizing the association between hormonal contraception (HC) and/or menopausal hormone replacement therapy (MHT) and breast cancer risk in patients considered “high risk.”Recent FindingsProspective studies of hormonal contraception methods for BRCA 1 mutation carriers do not demonstrate an association between combined oral contraceptives (COC) and hormone receptor-positive breast cancer, findings consistent with those seen from systematic reviews evaluating this risk in patients with a family history of breast cancer. The Center...

Bone mineral density in patients with primary ovarian insufficiency: A systematic review and Meta-Analysis
This study set out to provide the first systematic literature review and meta-analysison account of BMD content among women with POI.METHODS: Studies including women with POI and controls were eligible from PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and Web of Science databases (from their inception to April 2022). Two reviewers independently evaluated study eligibility. The meta-analysis was performed using the DerSimonian and Laird random effects model.RESULTS: Ten studies featuring 578 women with POI and 480 controls were selected. BMD content of femur neck (SMD:-0.76; 95 % CI: -1.20 to -0.31; P = 0.0008), the BMD content of nond...
