SF-6D population norms for the Hong Kong Chinese general population
ConclusionsThe SF-6D utility scores derived from different SF-36 or SF-12 health surveys were different. The population norms based on these three health surveys enable the normative comparisons of health utility scores from specific population or patient groups, and provide estimates of age –gender adjusted health utility scores for health economic evaluations.

Learning to write: The role of handwriting for Chinese spelling in kindergarten children.
Given the orthographic complexities of Chinese characters, handwriting skills may play an important role in how children learn to write Chinese. The present study includes a comprehensive battery of handwriting measures in relation to Chinese spelling in young children. Measures of handwriting, including stroke order, visual-motor integration (Hebrew and Vietnamese copying) and handwriting fluency, along with other reading-related cognitive skills, were administered to 141 kindergartners in Hong Kong schools. We assessed the extent to which these handwriting measures are associated with spelling. A series of regression ana...

Unicompartmental knee replacement – An underrated alternative of total knee replacement: A matched comparative study analysing their benefits and risks in local population
ConclusionBecause of less operative risk and faster rehabilitation, this study suggested that unicompartmental knee replacement is more cost effective and might be a better choice for patients with unicompartmental arthritis in local population.

Influence of ultra-endurance exercise on alveolar-capillary recruitment and lung diffusion
Conclusion: The data suggest a transient decrease in DLco following ultraendurance exercise is related to pulmonary de-recruitment; however, alveolar-capillary recruitment during low-intensity exercise remains relatively preserved.

6-Bromoindirubin-3 ′-Oxime (6BIO) Suppresses the mTOR Pathway, Promotes Autophagy, and Exerts Anti-aging Effects in Rodent Liver
In this study, we aimed to investigate the anti-aging effect, and molecular mechanism, of the novel anti-aging drug 6BIO on naturally aged mouse liver. Rapamycin, a well-known promising anti-aging drug that delays aging through mTOR-dependent autophagy (Zhou and Ye, 2018), was used as the positive control in the study. To our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate the effects of 6BIO treatment in models of natural aging. Our results indicated that 6BIO ameliorates the decline of liver function with age, including lipid metabolism disorder, and attenuates hepatocyte senescence in aged mice, as revealed by altera...

Plant-Derived Alkaloids: The Promising Disease-Modifying Agents for Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Conclusion This paper summarizes the current findings regarding the anti-colitis activity of plant-derived alkaloids and shows how these alkaloids exhibit significant and beneficial effects in alleviating colonic inflammation. These natural alkaloids are not only promising agents for IBD treatment but are also components for developing new wonder drugs. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms or toxicological evaluation of most plant-derived alkaloids still require much scientific research, and their actual efficacies for IBD patients have not been verified well in field research. Thus, further clinical trials to elu...

Atrial Transcriptional Profiles of Molecular Targets Mediating Electrophysiological Function in Aging and Pgc-1 β Deficient Murine Hearts
Conclusion: These findings limit the possible roles of gene transcriptional changes in previously reported age-dependent pro-arrhythmic electrophysiologial changes observed in Pgc-1β-/- atria to an altered Ca2+-ATPase (Atp2a2) expression. This directly parallels previously reported arrhythmic mechanism associated with p21-activated kinase type 1 deficiency. This could add to contributions from the direct physiological outcomes of mitochondrial dysfunction, whether through reactive oxygen species (ROS) production or altered Ca2+ homeostasis. Introduction Atrial arrhythmias constitute a major public health pro...

Visual statistical learning and orthographic awareness in Chinese children with and without developmental dyslexia
This study examined the role of visual statistical learning in reading and writing and its relationship to orthographic awareness in Hong Kong Chinese children with and without developmental dyslexia. Thirty-five 7- to 8-year-old children with developmental dyslexia and 37 chronologically age-matched controls were tested on visual statistical learning, orthographic awareness, nonverbal cognitive ability, Chinese word reading, and word dictation tasks. Visual statistical learning was assessed using a triplet learning paradigm that required children to detect the temporal order of visual stimuli. Orthographic awareness was m...

Medtronic Gives Heart Docs Something to & #039;MARVEL & #039; At
Study results published this week in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology: Clinical Electrophysiology show that an investigational set of algorithms in Medtronic's Micra transcatheter pacing system (TPS) significantly improves synchrony and cardiac function in patients with impaired electrical conduction between the chambers of the heart, a condition called atrioventricular (AV) block. The results from the MARVEL 2 study are expected to be presented Nov. 16 at the American Heart Association's annual scientific sessions. Medtronic said that based on positive results from both...

Prevalence of diabetic nephropathy among Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and different categories of their estimated glomerular filtration rate based on the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equation in primary care in Hong Kong: a cross-sectional study
ConclusionsDiabetic nephropathy was common among Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes in primary care in Hong Kong. Early identification and control of the modifiable risk factors are of upmost importance in preventing the complication.

Does the AQHI reduce cardiovascular hospitalization in Hong Kong's elderly population?
CONCLUSION: Hong Kong's AQHI helped reduced hospital admissions in the elderly for HPD and AMI but had no effect on overall emergency hospitalization for CVD. To maximize health benefits of the policy, at risk groups need to be able to follow the behavioral changes recommended by the AQHI warnings. PMID: 31801101 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Fine particulate matter and cause-specific mortality in the Hong Kong elder patients with chronic kidney disease.
This study aimed to estimate the association between fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and a spectrum of deaths among CKD patients. We took leverage of the Elderly Health Service cohort (n = 66,820), a large Hong Kong elderly cohort followed up till 2010. A total of 902 CKD incident patients in the cohort were identified during the follow-up period. We estimated yearly PM2.5 at the residential address for each CKD patient based on a satellite-based spatiotemporal model. We used Cox proportional hazards models with attained age as the underlying timescale to assess the association between long-term exposure to PM2.5 and cau...
