ABSTRACT: High mortality rates continue among African Americans related to complications of uncontrolled hypertension. The purpose of this study was to determine if a faith-based self-management education program would improve self-care activities related to the management of hypertension among African American adults. Ten African American adults who reported a diagnosis of hypertension for 6 months or longer completed an 8-week education program focused on strategies for hypertension management. The education program was enhanced with the utilization of spiritual components of prayer, Scripture reading, and journaling.

Conclusions: There is a need to develop and test interventions that improve self-management in elderly patients with hypertension. Specifically, individualized interventions to promote exercise among elderly persons with hypertension who are single and living alone are needed. Male patients with a lower education level, poor well-being, poor family function, and the lowest self-management levels are a key population to target.

Conclusion In the first poststroke year, direct costs have remained stable over time and can be predicted by the level of education and physical functioning. The identification of specific direct cost predictors would be helpful for developing more socially and economically tailored interventions for stroke survivors in their first year after their stroke.

The present study compared thrombolytic therapy with urokinase and reteplase. A total of 37 patients presenting with acute high-risk pulmonary embolism at the Intensive Care Unit of Weinan Central Hospital of Shaanxi Province (Weinan, China) between June 2013 and January 2017 were retrospectively analyzed. According to their treatment, these subjects were assigned to the reteplase group (n=16) or the urokinase group (n=21). Systolic blood pressure (SBP), heart rate (HR) a...

Authors: Dang ZC, Tang B, Li B, Liu S, Ge RL, Li ZQ, Lu DX Abstract Bosentan is an effective drug for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). The aim of the present meta-analysis was to examine the evidence concerning the efficacy and safety of bosentan therapy combined with prostacyclin analogues or phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5) inhibitors for treating PAH. Eligible published studies were collected from Embase, PubMed, The Cochrane Library and the www.clinicaltrials.gov website. Heterogeneity was assessed using the Cochran Q-statistic test. Results were presented as risk ratios or mean differenc...

Authors: Cao WZ, Zhou ZQ, Jiang S, Li H, Niu W, Gao P, Li GJ, Chen F Abstract Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has more recently become a leading cause of cancer-associated mortality worldwide. Particularly at an advanced stage, the prognosis is generally poor due to lack of effective treatments. Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) is now a recognized therapy for advanced HCC, serving to deprive tumors of feeder arteries through induced ischemic necrosis. However, there is also a potential for undesired circulatory toxicity owing to drug reflux from tumor artery to surrounding healthy tissues. Although effective c...

Abstract We studied dynamic thiol/disulphide homeostasis, an indicator of oxidative stress, to investigate the effects of newly initiated exercise training on sedentary obese adults. Seventeen sedentary obese adults and 15 normal-weight controls were included in the sample for this study. The obese adults were given a physical exercise training program that lasted twelve weeks. Before and after the exercise training program, blood samples were collected, and serum thiol/disulphide parameters were measured by using a novel technique. Before the start of the exercise training, it was observed that thiol/disulphide h...
