Aspergillosis in immunocompromised patients with haematological malignancies.
Authors: Gletsou E, Ioannou M, Liakopoulos V, Tsiambas E, Ragos V, Stefanidis I Abstract Aspergillosis, which is saprophytic in nature, is known to cause massive destruction of paranasal sinuses in immunocompromised hosts, but in immunocompetent individuals invasive aspergillosis is rare. Diagnosis is posed from history, physical examination including anterior and posterior rhinoscopy, endoscopy of the nose and paranasal sinuses, radiological findings (CT and/or MRI), fungus cultures and histopathological examination. Non-specific presenting symptoms provide time for infection to extent from sinuses to vit...

Does the reduction of inferior turbinate affect lower airway functions?
ConclusionThis study demonstrated that the widening of the nasal passage after the reduction of the inferior turbinate size had a favorable effect on the pulmonary function tests.

Evaluation of choroidal thickness measurements in patients with marked nasal septal deviation
ConclusionOur results suggest that marked nasal septal deviation may not lead to significant hypoxia and sympathetic activation, resulting in deterioration of the choroidal blood flow and consequent choroidal thickening.

Dangers of use of prophylactic antibiotics in patients with a primary immunodeficiency
Antibiotic prophylaxis is often used as treatment for patients with primary immunodeficiencies (PI) and resistant chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). We investigated the relationship between antibiotic prophylaxis and resistant organisms cultured on rhinoscopy in these patients. (Source: Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology)

The evaluation of malignant mucosal melanoma of nasal cavity with a rare occasion.
Authors: Kepekci AH, Kig C, Gundogan GI Abstract Malignant mucosal melanoma is an uncommon disease with a low rate of survival. Malignancies of nasal mucosa which usually presents with nasal obstruction, epistaxis and back drip are difficult to treat and often have poor prognosis. The present case had presented to our clinic with classic symptoms and diagnostic findings of nasal polyposis. Consistently, the patient had previously been diagnosed with and treated for nasal polyposis in another ENT clinic. Physical examination, rhinoscopic examination, computed tomography (CT) scan of the head did not reveal ...

Oncocytoma of the nasal septum: A rare cause of persistent irritation
We present a 64 year old woman of Caribbean origin who presented with left sided nasal irritation only. Direct rhinoscopy confirmed a small nasal septum lesion. This was surgically excised and histologically identified as an oncocytoma. This case highlights the need for thorough initial assessment and careful histological analysis to detect rare nasal neoplasms. (Source: Human Pathology: Case Reports)

Acute Dentoalveolar Abscess of Sinusal Origin: an Uncommon Case Report
Dentoalveolar abscess of sinusal origin is uncommon and may lead to an unfavorable outcome. A 25-year-old woman presented with a severe headache that had evolved approximately 5 months prior. Computed tomography analysis showed diffuse and irregular mucoperiosteal thickening of all the sinuses. After the rhinoscopy, and based on the clinical and imagological findings, the patient was diagnosed with rhinosinusopathy. Antibiotics and corticoid drugs were prescribed. One day after the rhinoscopy, the patient showed spread of the sinus infection to the dental tissues, requiring emergency dental care due to diffuse facial cellu...

Common Sites, Etiology, and Solutions of Persistent Septal Deviation in Revision Septoplasty.
Conclusion: Middle septum and caudal septum were common sites of persistent deviation. Proper chondrotomy with excision of deviated middle septum and correction of the caudal deviation with batten graft are key maneuvers to treat persistent deviation. Nasal Framework Reconstruction in Patient with Eosinophilic Angiocentric Fibrosis
AbstractEosinophilic angiocentric Fibrosis (EAF) is a rare condition involving the sinonasal tract and nasal septum which is mostly considered as a benign condition. EAF could present with progressive nasal obstruction as its most common symptom. In this case report, we try to report a case of middle aged man with nasal septum tumor-link lesion which was diagnosed with EAF. A 45  years old man presented with complete nasal obstruction who described a growing nasal cavity mass for over 6 months. Anterior rhinoscopy revealed bilateral mass with a smooth surface on the nasal septum and mass protruded into both nasal cavitie...

Could nasal septal deformities type 5 and 6 be a predictive factor of the indi- vidual genetic predilection for the onset of an acute coronary syndrome?.
CONCLUSION: the fact that types 5 and 6 are inherited deformities and not related to trauma against the nose suggests the possible genetic predisposition for the onset of ACS with positive coronary angiography. PMID: 29727128 [PubMed - in process] (Source: B-ENT)

Destructive Fibrosarcoma of the Maxillary Sinus
Paranasal fibrosarcoma of nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses is a very rare malignant tumor. It is usually presented with nasal obstruction and epistaxis. In this clinical report, clinical symptoms, pathogenesis, and treatment principles of a paranasal fibrosarcoma originating from the right maxillary sinus and obstructing the right nasal passage are discussed. A 55-year-old male patient was admitted to the authors clinic with complaints of nasal obstruction and epistaxis lasting for 2 years. Anterior rhinoscopy revealed a mass lesion which obstructed the right nasal passage and caused frequent epistaxis. An opacity consi...
