Dietary Supplement Use in Transmasculine People: Results of an Online Survey of Volunteer Adults
CONCLUSION: Transmasculine people in our study reported a high use of dietary supplements. Differences in the types of products and number of products used, as well as specific motivations for use likely exist within this subpopulation, however, future nationally-representative longitudinal studies are needed to fully elucidate these patterns and for informing evidence-based nutrition guidance.PMID:38343146 | DOI:10.1080/19390211.2024.2316162 (Source: Journal of Dietary Supplements)

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 781: Comparison of Multiple NIR Spectrometers for Detecting Low-Concentration Nitrogen-Based Adulteration in Protein Powders
ltan Kovacs Protein adulteration is a common fraud in the food industry due to the high price of protein sources and their limited availability. Total nitrogen determination is the standard analytical technique for quality control, which is incapable of distinguishing between protein nitrogen and nitrogen from non-protein sources. Three benchtops and one handheld near-infrared spectrometer (NIRS) with different signal processing techniques (grating, Fourier transform, and MEM—micro-electro-mechanical system) were compared with detect adulteration in protein powders at low concentration levels. Whey, beef,...

High School Athletes' Use and Knowledge of (Safe) Nutritional Supplement Use: An Exploratory Study
In conclusion, almost all athletes in this study reported the use of multiple nutritional supplements annually. Only one-fourth of the athletes reported consistently using third-party tested supplements. Knowledge of where and how tested supplements could be purchased was limited in this high school athlete population.PMID:38230707 | DOI:10.1080/19390211.2023.2301361 (Source: Journal of Dietary Supplements)

Anoikis regulator GLI2 promotes NC cell immunity escape by TGF- β-mediated non-classic hedgehog signaling in colorectal cancer: based on artificial intelligence and big data analysis
Aging (Albany NY). 2023 Dec 29;15. doi: 10.18632/aging.205283. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Anoikis is a speed-limited procedure to inhibit tumor metastasis during epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Previous studies have explored anoikis-related genes (ARG) in predicting prognosis and distinguishing tumoral immunity in many types of cancer. However, the role of ARGs in regulating NK cell exhaustion (NKE) and in predicting chemotherapy sensitivity is not clear. Therefore, it is necessary to work on it.METHODS: Gene expression profiles and clinical features are collected from TCGA and GEO, and data analysi...

The Development and Efficacy of a High School Athlete Education Program for Safe Nutritional Supplement Use
In conclusion, education resulted in more high school athletes reporting future third-party tested supplements use, and TPB construct scores did not change over time but could explain a substantial part of the variance of safe supplement use intentions.PMID:38131657 | DOI:10.1080/19390211.2023.2293845 (Source: Journal of Dietary Supplements)

A diet containing cod backbone proteins attenuated the development of mesangial sclerosis and tubular dysfunction in male obese BTBR ob/ob mice
ConclusionA diet containing cod backbone protein powder attenuated the development of mesangial sclerosis and tubular dysfunction in obese BTBRob/ob mice, but did not prevent the development of glomerular hypertrophy and albuminuria in these mice. (Source: European Journal of Nutrition)

Effect of Protein Supplementation on Plasma Sodium Levels in the Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuresis - a Monocentric Open-Label Proof-of-Concept Study - the TREASURE Study
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that protein supplementation with protein powder increases plasma sodium levels in patients with chronic SIAD through protein-induced ureagenesis and osmotic diuresis. The effects are comparable to oral urea intake.PMID:37540987 | DOI:10.1093/ejendo/lvad108 (Source: European Journal of Endocrinology)
