Effect of Protein Supplementation on Plasma Sodium Levels in the Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuresis - a Monocentric Open-Label Proof-of-Concept Study - the TREASURE Study
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that protein supplementation with protein powder increases plasma sodium levels in patients with chronic SIAD through protein-induced ureagenesis and osmotic diuresis. The effects are comparable to oral urea intake.PMID:37540987 | DOI:10.1093/ejendo/lvad108 (Source: European Journal of Endocrinology)

Development of a novel certified reference material for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in whey protein powder
Anal Bioanal Chem. 2023 Jul 28. doi: 10.1007/s00216-023-04863-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMatrix-based certified reference materials (CRMs) play a central role in the analysis of food contaminants for ensuring measurement accuracy and comparability, as they exhibit the same matrix effects during sample preparation and measurement as the food sample under investigation. However, the availability of such CRMs is still limited. This is also true for matrix CRMs containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), for which maximum levels in food are set in the EU by the Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/915 and in Switzerla...

Effect of prehabilitation-related DIETary protein intake on Quality of Recovery after elective cardiac surgery (DIETQoR) study: protocol of a randomised controlled trial
Introduction Protein malnutrition is associated with higher risks of postoperative complications, mortality, prolonged postoperative stays in hospital, slower physical and mental recovery after surgery and lower subsequent health-related quality of life. To reduce the risk of postoperative morbidity and mortality, nutritional prehabilitation programmes have been developed recently to build up patient’s nutritional reserve to withstand the stress of surgery. The intervention involves nutritional screening and counselling, and increasing dietary protein intake in protein-malnourished patients in the several weeks befor...

Topical ocular protein delivery based on protein powder suspensions in semifluorinated alkanes
In this study we tested suspensions based on the semifluorinated alkane F6H8 to improve the topical ocular protein delivery. Such suspensions are well known for the increased protein stability compared to aqueous solutions. Furthermore, F6H8 is well known as vehicle for ocular delivery due to its easy spreading on the cornea. Penetration of a model mAb and its Fab fragment was tested in an ex vivo corneal penetration test. The amount of penetrated protein was increased when the protein powder suspensions were used compared to the respective aqueous solutions. Sodium caprate as penetration enhancer at 5mg/ml substantially i...

Legume consumption in adults and risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Legume consumption was not found to influence risk of CVD and T2D in healthy adult populations with generally low legume consumption. However, protective effects on risk factors, seen in RCTs, lend some support for recommending legume consumption as part of diverse and healthy dietary patterns for prevention of CVD and T2D.PMID:37288088 | PMC:PMC10243120 | DOI:10.29219/fnr.v67.9541 (Source: Food and Nutrition Research)
