Food proteins in the regulation of blood glucose control
Adv Food Nutr Res. 2022;102:181-231. doi: 10.1016/bs.afnr.2022.05.001. Epub 2022 Aug 1.ABSTRACTFood proteins, depending on their origin, possess unique characteristics that regulate blood glucose via multiple physiological mechanisms, including the insulinotropic effects of amino acids, the activation of incretins, and slowing gastric emptying rate. The strategies aimed at curbing high blood glucose are important in preventing impaired blood glucose control, including insulin resistance, prediabetes and diabetes. The effect of proteins on blood glucose control can be achieved with high-protein foods short-term, and high-pr...

Killing two birds with one stone: chemical and biological upcycling of polyethylene terephthalate plastics into food
This article explores the feasibility of using microorganisms in an industrial system that upcycles PET into edible microbial protein powder to solve both problems simultaneously. Many microorganisms can utilize plastics as feedstock, and the resultant microbial biomass contains fats, nutrients, and proteins similar to those found in human diets. While microbial degradation of PET is promising, biological PET depolymerization is too slow to resolve the global plastic crisis and projected food shortages. Evidence reviewed here suggests that by coupling chemical depolymerization and biological degradation of PET, and using c...

Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose derivatives stabilize fragment antibody against aggregation in spray dried formulations at elevated temperature and resist pH changes
Eur J Pharm Biopharm. 2022 Jul 30:S0939-6411(22)00152-7. doi: 10.1016/j.ejpb.2022.07.011. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe ability to deliver stable and active dried protein therapeutics from biopharmaceutical drug delivery systems is critical for solid dosage formulation development. Spray dried formulations with carefully selected excipients provide a unique opportunity in amorphous phase stabilization of the therapeutic proteins. Herein, we discuss the role of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose acetate succinate (HPMCAS) derivatives as polymeric excipients for stabilizing a model fragment antibody (Fab2) during high tempera...
