Distributions of recorded pain in mental health records: a natural language processing based study
Conclusion The findings of this study show sociodemographic and diagnostic differences in recorded pain. Specifically, lower documentation across certain groups indicates the need for better screening protocols and training on recognising varied pain presentations. Additionally, targeting improved detection of pain for minority and disadvantaged groups by care providers can promote health equity. (Source: BMJ Open)

Community antibiotic prescribing in patients with COVID-19 across three pandemic waves: a population-based study in Scotland, UK
Conclusion Community antibiotic prescriptions in COVID-19 episodes were uncommon in this population and likelihood was associated with patient factors. The reduction over pandemic waves may represent increased knowledge regarding COVID-19 treatment and/or evolving symptomatology. (Source: BMJ Open)

Longitudinal associations of polypharmacy and frailty with major cardiovascular events and mortality among more than half a million middle-aged participants of the UK Biobank
Polypharmacy, which is most commonly defined as concomitant use of 5 or more medications [1], is common in the older population due to increasing prevalence of multimorbidity with increasing age [2 –4]. Previous studies have shown significant associations of polypharmacy with falls, adverse drug reactions/events, hospitalization, and mortality [5]. As co-morbidity and age-related changes in medication pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics are more profound, polypharmacy is particularly probl ematic in frail patients [6]. (Source: Maturitas)

Navigating Postpartum Contraceptive Options for Primary Care Providers
The postpartum period is a critical time for health care providers to address contraceptive methods and family planning options. Waiting until the first postpartum visit to initiate contraception may be too late because approximately 40% to 57% of patients have disclosed engaging in unprotected intercourse before the standard 6-week postpartum visit.1 It is also estimated that 70% of pregnancies occurring within the first year of the postpartum period are unintended. Short interpregnancy intervals, defined as pregnancies with less than a 12-month interval, can increase the risk of neonatal and maternal complications, inclu...

Iron and risk of dementia: Mendelian randomisation analysis in UK Biobank
Discussion Genetic evidence supports a causal relationship between higher TSAT and risk of clinically defined non-AD and vascular dementia, in European and African groups. This association appears to be independent of apolipoprotein-E 4. (Source: Journal of Medical Genetics)

Demographics and clinical characteristics of patients of prescribing psychologists, psychiatrists, and primary care physicians
Am Psychol. 2024 Apr 18. doi: 10.1037/amp0001352. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo describe the characteristics of patients receiving psychotropic medication from prescribing psychologists, psychiatrists, and primary care physicians. This descriptive study was conducted using private insurance claims of patients from New Mexico and Louisiana receiving psychotropic medications (anticonvulsants, antidepressants, antipsychotics, hypotensive agents, anxiolytics/sedatives/hypnotics, and stimulants) from 2004 to 2021 (N = 307,478). Patient characteristics were captured during the 6 months prior to their first psychotropic medica...

Exertional Heatstroke Survivors' Knowledge and Beliefs about Exertional Heatstroke Diagnosis, Treatment, and Return to Play
CONCLUSIONS: Our patients were knowledgeable on the potential seriousness and adverse health effects of EHS and the necessity of TREC for diagnosis. However, educational efforts should be directed towards helping patients understand safe recovery and return-to-play timelines following EHS.PMID:38632831 | DOI:10.4085/1062-6050-0677.23 (Source: J Athl Train)

Significant healthcare resource utilisation in the management of skin and soft tissue infections in the Torres Strait, Australia
CONCLUSION: Healthcare costs associated with SSTIs in the Torres Strait are substantial. The implementation of effective preventative and primary care interventions may enable resources to be reallocated to address other health priorities in the Torres Strait.PMID:38632695 | DOI:10.22605/RRH8572 (Source: Rural and Remote Health)

Facing the digital frontier: exploring user acceptance of electronic health records in an urban, rural and remote setting in the Philippines
CONCLUSION: Co-producing interventions with primary care providers is crucial in sustaining EHR systems. Rather than developing a technology based on the surveillance needs of policymakers, an EHR developed from the grassroots was shown to be well-received by end-users.PMID:38637020 | PMC:PMC11029422 | DOI:10.1136/bmjoq-2023-002621 (Source: Rural Remote Health)

Characteristics of primary care practices associated with patient education during COVID-19: results of the cross-sectional PRICOV-19 study in 38 countries
CONCLUSION: The model presented in this article is still incomplete and requires further investigation to identify other configuration elements favorable to educational activities. However, the results already highlight certain levers that will enable the development of this educational approach appropriate to primary care.PMID:38637765 | PMC:PMC11027213 | DOI:10.1186/s12875-024-02348-x (Source: Primary Care)
