Pilonidal sinus: an overview of historical and current management modalities
This article details the different methods of managing acute and chronic pilonidal disease ranging from treatments in the primary care setting to those in hospital theatres, with special attention to newer modalities of minimally invasive interventions. As a chronic illness that often affects those of working age, pilonidal disease can confer significant morbidity especially, but not limited to, a substantial amount of time off work. Treatment of chronic disease in particular, has evolved from midline techniques to off-midline techniques, with more recent developments offering promising solutions to reduce acute flare ups ...

National survey conducted among Italian pediatricians examining the therapeutic management of croup
CONCLUSIONS: Significant differences exist between recommended guidelines and clinical practice in croup management. This study suggests wide variability in both the treatment of croup and clinical decision making strategies among hospital and primary care pediatricians. Addressing this issue could lead to noteworthy clinical and economic benefits.PMID:38522591 | DOI:10.1016/j.rmed.2024.107587 (Source: Respiratory Care)

Social concordance and patient reported experiences in countries with different gender equality: a multinational survey
CONCLUSION: Consultations in which both patient and GP are female are associated with higher ratings of communication and involvement in decision making, irrespective of the GEI of the countries concerned. Age concordance was associated with all PREMs except communication. Although effect sizes are small, social concordance could create a suggestion of shared identity, diminish professional uncertainty and changes communication patterns, thereby enhancing health care outcomes.PMID:38521895 | DOI:10.1186/s12875-024-02339-y (Source: Primary Care)

Moderate-intensity continuous training and high-intensity interval training modulate the composition of the oral microbiota of elderly adults: Randomized controlled trial
Joshua Lederberg, a geneticist and Nobel prize laureate in 1958, first coined the term microbiome as a community of commensal, symbiotic, and pathogenic micro-organisms [1]. The microbial colonization of the human body starts before birth, with a primary fetal colonization [2], then, the diversity, stability, and complexity evolves influenced by age, sex, development of the immune system and environmental factors for three years. Afterwards, the microbial colony remains stable in healthy adults and becomes unstable again when elderly. (Source: Maturitas)

Continuation of Pediatric Care after Transfer to Adult Care Among Autistic Youth Overlap of Pediatric and Adult Care
J Autism Dev Disord. 2024 Mar 23. doi: 10.1007/s10803-024-06314-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe transition from pediatric to adult health care is a vulnerable time period for autistic adolescents and young adults (AYA) and for some autistic AYA may include a period of receiving care in both the pediatric and adult health systems. We sought to assess the proportion of autistic AYA who continued to use pediatric health services after their first adult primary care appointment and to identify factors associated with continued pediatric contact. We analyzed electronic medical record (EMR) data from a cohort of autistic AY...

General practitioners' experiences of providing somatic care for patients with severe mental illness: a qualitative study
CONCLUSION: The GPs' interactions with SMI patients brought numerous challenges, although treating these patients were concurrently acknowledged as vital and fulfilling. The findings suggest that increased allocated time in general practice consultations for patients with SMI is important to support the somatic treatment requirements of this patient group.PMID:38519880 | DOI:10.1186/s12875-024-02338-z (Source: Primary Care)

Aesthetic treatment planning simplified using digital smile design: A case report
Prim Dent J. 2024 Mar;13(1):91-94. doi: 10.1177/20501684241233409.ABSTRACTDigital smile design (DSD) plays an essential role in the planning of aesthetic treatments. However, most digital smile designing software programmes are expensive and require specialised training and skill for effective implementation. This paper illustrates the use of Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft PowerPoint, which are economical and user friendly for planning aesthetics in a clinical case.PMID:38520191 | DOI:10.1177/20501684241233409 (Source: Primary Care)
