Longitudinal associations of polypharmacy and frailty with major cardiovascular events and mortality among more than half a million middle-aged participants of the UK Biobank

Polypharmacy, which is most commonly defined as concomitant use of 5 or more medications [1], is common in the older population due to increasing prevalence of multimorbidity with increasing age [2 –4]. Previous studies have shown significant associations of polypharmacy with falls, adverse drug reactions/events, hospitalization, and mortality [5]. As co-morbidity and age-related changes in medication pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics are more profound, polypharmacy is particularly probl ematic in frail patients [6].
