24-hour urinary sodium and potassium excretions, plasma metabolomic profiles, and cardiometabolic biomarkers in US adults: A cross-sectional study
CONCLUSIONS: We discovered metabolites and metabolomics pathways associated with a high-sodium diet, including metabolites related to biotin, propanoate, lysine, and BCAA pathways. The metabolomics signature for a higher sodium-low potassium diet is associated with multiple components of elevated cardiometabolic risk.PMID:38762185 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajcnut.2024.05.010 (Source: Am J Clin Nutr)

Clinical and functional characterization of a novel KCNJ11 (c.101G   & gt;  A, p.R34H) mutation associated with maturity-onset diabetes mellitus of the young type 13
ConclusionFor the first time, we revealed the pathogenic mechanism of KCNJ11 (c.101G  >  A, p.R34H) associated with MODY13. This mutant can cause alterations in KATP channel activity, reduce sensitivity to glucose stimulation, and impair pancreatic β-cell secretory function by downregulating insulin secretion-associated exocytosis proteins. Therefore, oral sulfonylurea drugs can low er blood glucose levels through pro-insulinotropic effects and are more favorable for patients with this mutation. (Source: Endocrine)

Increased resistance against tellurite is conferred by a mutation in the promoter region of uncommon tellurite resistance gene < em > tehB < /em > in the < em > ter < /em > -negative Shiga toxin-producing < em > Escherichia coli < /em > O157:H7
In this study, we found a novel variant of PT resistance genes, tehAB, in STEC O157:H7. Molecular experiments clearly showed that one point mutation in a predicted internal promoter region of tehB upregulated the expression of the gene and consequently led to increased resistance to PT. Because tehAB genes are ubiquitous across E. coli, these results provide universal insight into PT resistance in this species.PMID:38757978 | DOI:10.1128/aem.02283-23 (Source: Applied and Environmental Microbiology)

A schedule for tapering glucocorticoid treatment in patients with severe SARS-CoV 2 infection can prevent acute adrenal insufficiency in the geriatric population
CONCLUSIONS: A structured schedule for the tapering of GC treatment used in patients with severe COVID-19 can reduce the risk of adrenal crisis and acute adrenal insufficiency.PMID:38758491 | DOI:10.1007/s42000-024-00564-9 (Source: Hormones)

TASK-3, two-pore potassium channels, contribute to circadian rhythms in the electrical properties of the suprachiasmatic nucleus and play a role in driving stable behavioural photic entrainment
In this study, we investigated the role of TASK-3 in SCN circadian neuronal regulation and behavioural photoentrainment using a TASK-3 global knockout mouse model. Our findings demonstrate the importance of TASK-3 in maintaining SCN hyperpolarization during the night and establishing SCN sensitivity to glutamate. Specifically, we observed that TASK-3 knockout mice lacked diurnal variation in resting membrane potential and exhibited altered glutamate sensitivity both in vivo and in vitro. Interestingly, despite these changes, the mice lacking TASK-3 were still able to maintain relatively normal circadian behaviour.PMID:3875...

Biochar and silicon relegate the adversities of beryllium stress in pepper by modulating methylglyoxal detoxification and antioxidant defense mechanism
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 May 17. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-33547-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIndustrial activities have escalated beryllium (Be) release in environment which negatively affect plant growth and human health. This investigation describes Be-induced stress in pepper and its palliation by application of pineapple fruit peel biochar (BC) and potassium silicate (Si). The treatment of Be reduced seedling length, biomass, and physiological attributes and enhanced electrolyte leakage, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), superoxide (O2•-) level in pepper plants; however, these oxidative stress markers were reduced...

Seasonal and interannual changes (2005-2021) of lake water quality and the implications for sustainable management in a rapidly growing metropolitan region, central China
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 May 17. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-33618-x. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA series of restoration measures such as municipal wastewater treatment and aquaculture closures have been implemented in Wuhan City during recent years. In order to explore the impact of restoration measures and climate change on lake water quality, long-term (2005-2021) water quality data of 47 lakes were explored to reveal spatiotemporal changes in lake water quality. Percentages of polluted lakes were calculated according to six water-quality parameters, including total phosphorus (TP), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), chem...
