Predictors of damage accrual and its impact on health-related quality of life of thrombotic antiphospholipid syndrome: Independent validation of the damage index for antiphospholipid syndrome (DIAPS)
CONCLUSION: This external validation of DIAPS reinforces the ability of the score to correlate with HR-QoL while also highlighting risk factors for HR-QoL impairment other than damage accrual.PMID:38616341 | DOI:10.1177/09612033241246360 (Source: Lupus)

Brazilian Twin Studies: A Scoping Review
Twin Res Hum Genet. 2024 Apr 15:1-10. doi: 10.1017/thg.2024.17. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe current study was motivated by an interest in deepening understanding of Brazilian twin research, which is underrepresented internationally, in an effort to rectify this situation. Our aim was threefold: (1) to carry out a comprehensive investigation of Brazilian research on twins according to the area of knowledge; (2) to evaluate the representation of research in the field of psychology in comparison with other areas; (3) to evaluate characteristics of the research that may have contributed to its exclusion from the comprehe...

Viruses, Vol. 16, Pages 614: Evaluation of a Revised Point-of-Care Test for the Detection of Feline Leukaemia p27 Antigen and Anti-p15E Antibodies in Cats
This study aimed to assess this PoC test’s performance concerning FeLV p27 antigen and FeLV anti-p15E antibody detection. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values (PPV, NPV) were assessed after ten minutes (recommended) and 20 min (prolonged) incubation times. The test results were evaluated as either positive or negative. Serum samples from 934 cats were included, originating from Italy (n = 269), Portugal (n = 240), Germany (n = 318), and France (n = 107). FeLV p27 antigen and anti-p15E antibodies were measured by reference standard ELISAs and compared to the PoC test results. The P...

Reasons for conversions in thoracoscopic repairs of neonatal congenital diaphragmatic hernias: a systematic review
ConclusionsNeonatal thoracoscopic repair for CDH is associated with conversion in 20% of cases. Based on available data, defect size and patch repairs have been identified as the predominant reasons, followed by technical difficulties to reduce the herniated organs and ventilation related issues. However, data specifically relating to conversion is poorly documented in a high number of reports (40%). Accurate data reporting in future will be important to better estimate and quantify reasons for conversions in neonatal thoracoscopy for CDH. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

IJERPH, Vol. 21, Pages 478: Use of and Beliefs toward Novel Tobacco and Nicotine Products among Portuguese University Students: A Pandemic Survey
nço Over the last decade, novel tobacco and nicotine product experimentation and use have dramatically increased among the youth, even in countries with strong tobacco control and anti-smoking social norms. We performed an online questionnaire-based cross-sectional study in March-June 2021, targeting students from the University of Beira Interior, Portugal. The aim was to assess the experimentation and use of tobacco and nicotine products and students’ beliefs towards these products. Of the 452 participants, 67.0% were female; the mean age was 21.9 ± 3 years. Most students (60.4%) reported...

A standardized approach to measuring gender transparency in languages
Acta Psychol (Amst). 2024 Apr 12;246:104236. doi: 10.1016/j.actpsy.2024.104236. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLanguages can express grammatical gender through different ortho-phonological regularities present in nouns (e.g., the cues "-o" and "-a" for the masculine and the feminine respectively in Italian, Portuguese, or Spanish). The term "gender transparency" was coined to describe these regularities (Bates et al., 1995). In gendered languages, we can hence distinguish between transparent nouns, i.e., those displaying form regularities; opaque nouns, i.e., those with ambiguous endings; and irregular nouns, i.e., those th...

Factorial analysis of the Brazilian-Portuguese version of the Work Ability Index, reproducibility and validity of the single item and the short version for online application
CONCLUSION: The reliability and construct and concurrent validity of the various versions of the WAI were strong to excellent in online applications. Confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated a new grouping of items for the WAI Brazilian version. However, it is necessary to be careful in the choice due to the distribution model of items in health domains and aspects of work.PMID:38613967 | DOI:10.1016/j.bjpt.2024.101060 (Source: Health Physics)

Self-mutilation: a systematic review
AbstractSelf-mutilation lesions can represent a clinical diagnosis challenge for healthcare professionals, as patients do not admit to self-mutilation. This leads to failed diagnoses due to the similarity of this condition to other diseases. Searches on the subject were carried out at the PubMed, Peri ódicos Capes, Scopus, Science Direct and WoS databases, according to the following inclusion criteria: articles in English, Portuguese or Spanish, published from 2018 to June 2023, encompassing case reports, case series and literature reviews. Men are slight more affected by self-mutilation injurie s, also presenting the mos...

Analysis of the Association of IL-1A, IL-1B and IL-1RN Polymorphisms with Peri-implantitis in a Portuguese Population
CONCLUSIONS: The genetic polymorphisms evaluated had no influence on the occurrence of periimplantitis in the population studied. Further research into genetic variations in different populations is needed to elucidate the role of genetic factors in the onset and progression of periimplant disease.PMID:38607354 | DOI:10.11607/jomi.10615 (Source: International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants)
