Assessment of Portuguese fitness centers: bridging the knowledge gap on harmful microbial contamination with focus on fungi
This study intends to characterize microbial contamination in Portuguese FC by passive sampling methods: electrostatic dust collectors (EDC) (N=39), settled dust (N=8), vacuum filters (N=8), and used cleaning mops (N=12). The obtained extracts were plated in selective culture media for fungi and bacteria. Filters, EDC, and mop samples' extracts were also screened for antifungal resistance and used for the molecular detection of the selected Aspergillus sections. The detection of mycotoxins was conducted using a high-performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC) system and to determine the cytotoxicity of microbial contaminants r...

Genes, Vol. 15, Pages 532: Resistome, Virulome, and Clonal Variation in Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in Healthy Swine Populations: A Cross-Sectional Study
Patricia Poeta This cross-sectional study investigates the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA): its prevalence, antimicrobial resistance, and molecular characteristics in healthy swine populations in central Portugal. A total of 213 samples were collected from pigs on twelve farms, and MRSA prevalence was assessed using selective agar plates and confirmed via molecular methods. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing and whole genome sequencing (WGS) were performed to characterize resistance profiles and genetic determinants. Among the 107 MRSA-positive samples (83.1% prevalence), fattening pigs and breed...

Molecular evidence of sporadic Coxiella burnetii excretion in sheep milk, central Portugal
In this study, a 2-year longitudinal approach was performed to ascertain the excretion ofC. burnetii in bulk tank milk samples of sheep from a mountain plateau in central Portugal, with sampling conducted during the years 2015 and 2016. From a total of 156 bulk tank milk samples tested by qPCR, only one showed to be positive forC. burnetii (1.28% [95%CI: 0.03 –6.94]), from 2015, the first year of collection. Bidirectional sequencing and phylogenetic analysis ofIS1111 transposase partial region confirmed the presence ofC. burnetii DNA. The presence ofC. burnetii in raw milk samples highlights the necessity for additional ...

Characterisation of Portuguese radiotherapy departments: Organisation, occupational exposure values and diagnostic reference levels for breast and prostate computed tomography planning
Portugal currently hosts 24 active radiotherapy departments, 8 public and 16 privates, presenting potential radiation exposure risks to multidisciplinary teams. Patients in these treatments also face ionising radiation during treatment planning and verification. (Source: Radiography)

Using Bar Velocity to Assess Post-match Neuromuscular Fatigue in Young Soccer Players
This study aimed to investigate the recovery of neuromuscular performance using mechanical parameters collected during jump (vertical and horizontal) and strength-power exercises in youth soccer players after official soccer matches. Twenty-one outfield highly trained youth male soccer athletes (age: 18.23±0.73 years; weight: 72.12±6.99 kg; height: 1.78±0.08 m) from two teams competing in the 1st division of U-19 Portuguese National Championship participated in this study. Players completed a battery of physical tests at −2 h, + 30 min, +2...

Characterization and quantification of epilepsy patients with hospital episodes in Portugal: A multicenter retrospective study from Liga Portuguesa Contra a Epilepsia
CONCLUSION: This study showed similar results to other European countries. However, due to methodological limitations, a prospective epidemiological study is needed to support this observation. Furthermore, the present study provides a comprehensive picture of hospitalized epilepsy patients in Portugal, their comorbidities, mortality, and hospital procedures.PMID:38642529 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2024.109771 (Source: Epilepsy and Behaviour)

Setting up a CFD model to evaluate the impact of green infrastructures on local air quality
AbstractGreen infrastructures have been pointed out as innovative solutions to deal with current and future challenges related to air pollution and climate change. Although the potential of green infrastructures, such as green walls and green roofs, to mitigate air pollution has been documented, evidence at a local scale is still limited. This work aims to increase knowledge about the potentialities of green infrastructures in improving local air quality, focusing on particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide and ozone pollutants, and by using a local-scale computational fluid dynamics model. The ENVI-met model was applied to a ...
