A bothremydid turtle (Pleurodira) from the middle Cenomanian of Vale de Figueira (Belas, Portugal)
Anat Rec (Hoboken). 2024 Mar 18. doi: 10.1002/ar.25429. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAn unpublished turtle shell from the middle Cenomanian of Vale de Figueira, near Belas (Lisbon District, Portugal), is recognized by us as collected in 1880 under the direction of Carlos Ribeiro. No turtle remains from that region had so far been figured, described or discussed from a systematic point of view. The specimen corresponds to a partial but articulated shell. It is attributed to Pleurodira and, more specifically, to Bothremydidae. Only one pre-Campanian turtle specimen was previously identified at the infrafamilial level in the...

A pan-cheloniid turtle from the Middle Miocene of Portugal
Anat Rec (Hoboken). 2024 Mar 14. doi: 10.1002/ar.25431. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCurrently, there is no information on the fossil record of Pan-Cheloniidae from the Neogene of the Iberian Peninsula. A well-preserved partial skeleton attributable to this lineage of turtles, from the Middle Miocene of Portugal, is presented here. It preserves much of the anterior half of its carapace, in which the plates remain articulated, as well as several articulated dorsal vertebrae, and an isolated cervical and a caudal vertebrae. The analysis of this Serravallian find shows that it cannot be attributed to a hitherto described tax...

IJERPH, Vol. 21, Pages 346: A Systematic Review on Intervention Treatment in Pathological Gambling
ela Leite Over the last century, there has been a growing interest in researching pathological gambling, particularly in industrialized nations. Historically, gambling was widely perceived as morally questionable, condemned by religious groups. However, contemporary concerns have shifted towards the health repercussions of gambling disorders and broader societal impacts like increased crime and money laundering. Governments, aiming to mitigate social harm, often regulate or directly oversee gambling activities. The global surge in legal gambling has resulted in a substantial rise in its prevalence, popularity, and acce...

Prospective external validation of IOTA methods for classifying adnexal masses and retrospective assessment of two-step strategy using benign descriptors and ADNEX: a Portuguese multicenter study
CONCLUSIONS: Our results showed a good to excellent performance of the IOTA methods in the studied Portuguese population, outperforming RMI. ADNEX was superior in accuracy, but interpretation of its ability to distinguish malignant subtypes was fundamentally limited not only by sample size but also by large differences in the prevalence of tumor subtypes. The IOTA MBDs have been shown to be reliable in identifying benign disease. The two-step strategy based on the application of MBDs, followed by the ADNEX model if MBDs are not applicable, has proven to be suitable for daily practice circumventing the need to use electroni...

Ethical issues in research with second victims: A scoping review
CONCLUSION: Over half of the included studies with second victims did not comply with fundamental ethical aspects, with risk to inflict respect for individual autonomy, confidentiality, and of not causing any harm to participants.IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING RESEARCH: Healthcare personnel involved in adverse events are most often nursing professionals; therefore, any breach of ethics in research with this population is likely to directly affect their rights as research participants. We provide recommendations to promote better research practices with second victims towards safeguarding their rights as research participants.PMI...

Ophthalmology Census 2021: A Demographic Characterisation of Ophthalmologists in Portugal
CONCLUSION: While the number of ophthalmologists in Portugal meets the international recommendations, there is a shortage in the public sector and most ophthalmologists work in large urban centres. The number of ophthalmologists in Portugal is expected to be stable for the next five years.PMID:38477300 | DOI:10.20344/amp.20321 (Source: Acta Medica Portuguesa)
