CXCR4 as possible druggable target linking inflammatory bowel disease and Parkinson's disease
AbstractParkinson ’s disease (PD) is a chronic, progressive, and second most prevalent neurological disorder affecting the motor system. It has been found that people suffering with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at 22% more risk for PD. In the current study, we have established a molecular link between gut a nd brain. The microarray gene expression datasets of Homo sapiens were obtained from Gene Expression Omnibus Database. Major genes involved in gut-brain connection were found to be CXCR4, LRRK2, APOE, SNCA, IL6, HIF-1α, ABCA1 etc. The common biological pathways linking both the pathologies were fou nd to be H...

Carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk assessment induced by pesticide residues in fresh pistachio in Iran based on Monte Carlo simulation
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Jan 10. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-25143-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis research is aimed at the analysis of 87 pesticides in 30 fresh pistachio samples prepared from stores in Iran by QuEChERS-ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). The results showed at least one pesticide was in 67% of fresh pistachio samples. Kresoxim methyl residue was detected in 20 samples with average of 0.11 mg kg-1; this average is 2.2 times more than maximum residue limit (MRL). Buprofezin was recognized in five samples with average of 0.17 mg kg-1 was observed wit...

Characterization of a putative novel higrevirus infecting Phellodendron amurense Rupr. in China
AbstractPhellodendron-associated higre-like virus (PaHLV) was identified inPhellodendron amurense Rupr. in China. Three near-full-length sequences of the viral genomic RNAs (RNA1 –RNA3) were first obtained by RNA-seq, and their complete sequences were then determined by RT-PCR, 5′-RACE, and 3′-RACE. RNA1–3 of PaHLV were determined to be 8,183, 3,062, and 3,998 nucleotides (nt) in length, respectively, excluding the poly(A) tail. All of the viral proteins encoded by P aHLV shared the highest amino acid sequence identity (44.8–78.1%) with the unclassified kitavirid pistachio virus X (PiVX, MT334618–MT334620) from...

In vitro and Pharmacoinformatics-based phytochemical screening for anticancer impacts of pistachio hull essential oil on AGS, PLC/PRF/5, and CACO2 cell lines
CONCLUSION: We showed inhibition of β-catenin protein in cancer cell lines. Four compounds of PHEO were suggested to have an inhibition effect on β-catenin and FZD7. These compounds can be useful in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancers. Altogether, the inhibitory role of β-catenin protein can be very effective and can be considered one of the therapeutic goals in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancers.PMID:36348196 | DOI:10.1007/s11033-022-07980-3 (Source: Molecular Biology Reports)

Effect of pistachio shell as a carbon source to regulate C/N on simultaneous removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater
Bioresour Technol. 2022 Nov 2:128234. doi: 10.1016/j.biortech.2022.128234. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAcid-pretreated pistachio shells were used as carbon sources to investigate the effects of carbon source dosage on simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal under different carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratios (7, 9, and 11). Results showed that C/N was positively correlated with mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) (R2 = 0.998, p<0.01) and f value (R2 = 0.975, p<0.05). Moreover, it was negatively correlated with the sludge volume index (SVI) (R2 = -0.959, p<0.05). C/N was also significantly negatively related to ch...

Revealing genetic diversity and population structure in Pistachio (Pistacia vera L.) by SSR markers
In this study, sixty-six pistachio cultivars and genotypes originated from six different countries were characterized and fingerprinted by 74 genomic and 18 genic SSR markers. SSR analysis identified 576 alleles for all 66 cultivars and genotypes. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 2 to 20 (CUPOhBa1592) alleles with a mean value of six alleles per locus. The polymorphism information content (PIC) values ranged from 0.07 (CUPVEST2939) to 0.87 (CUPSiOh2460) with a meanPIC value of 0.58. The pistachio cultivars and genotypes were divided into five clusters according to Structure and UPGMA (Unweighted Pair Group Metho...

Resveratrol in breast cancer treatment: from cellular effects to molecular mechanisms of action
Cell Mol Life Sci. 2022 Oct 4;79(11):539. doi: 10.1007/s00018-022-04551-4.ABSTRACTBreast cancer (BC) is one of the most common cancers in females and is responsible for the highest cancer-related deaths following lung cancer. The complex tumor microenvironment and the aggressive behavior, heterogenous nature, high proliferation rate, and ability to resist treatment are the most well-known features of BC. Accordingly, it is critical to find an effective therapeutic agent to overcome these deleterious features of BC. Resveratrol (RES) is a polyphenol and can be found in common foods, such as pistachios, peanuts, bilberries, ...

Sensors, Vol. 22, Pages 7134: Development of an Intelligent Imaging System for Ripeness Determination of Wild Pistachios
liwal Rapid, non-destructive, and smart assessment of the maturity levels of fruit facilitates their harvesting and handling operations throughout the supply chain. Recent studies have introduced machine vision systems as a promising candidate for non-destructive evaluations of the ripeness levels of various agricultural and forest products. However, the reported models have been fruit-specific and cannot be applied to other fruit. In this regard, the current study aims to evaluate the feasibility of estimating the ripeness levels of wild pistachio fruit using image processing and artificial intelligence techniques. Im...

Efficacy and mechanism of action of food isolated yeasts in the control of Aspergillus flavus growth on pistachio nuts
Food Microbiol. 2022 Dec;108:104100. doi: 10.1016/j.fm.2022.104100. Epub 2022 Aug 6.ABSTRACTDue to its nutritional characteristics, dried fruit and in particular pistachio is considered an important component in the daily diet. Unfortunately, pistachio nuts can be contaminated during storage with a wide range of pathogenic fungi, including Aspergillus flavus. The present work has evaluated how the use of two yeast strains belonging to the species Wickerhamomyces anomalus and Metschnikowia pulcherrima can inhibit the in vitro and in vivo growth of A. flavus. Both yeast strains demonstrated a good in vitro antifungal activit...
