Tree Nut-Induced Anaphylaxis in Canadian Emergency Departments: Rate, Clinical Characteristics and Management
CONCLUSION: Different TNA patterns in Canada may be due to differences in lifestyle (higher prevalence of Asian ethnicity in British Columbia versus Arabic ethnicity in Ontario and Quebec). IM epinephrine underutilization urges for EAI stocking in schools and restaurants, patient education, and consistent policies across Canada.PMID:35718284 | DOI:10.1016/j.anai.2022.06.008 (Source: Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology)

Smartphone-assisted paper-based multifunctional assay for on-site tandem detection of inorganic phosphate, neutral red and heparin
Talanta. 2022 May 27;247:123606. doi: 10.1016/j.talanta.2022.123606. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTToday, easy availability and efficient detection assays in low-resource settings are mandatory. Therefore, a smartphone-assisted paper-based detection strategy using eosin Y (EY)-embed ZIF-8 nanocomposite for phosphate (Pi), neutral red (NR) and heparin (HP) on site testing was fabricated. After adding the targets in a specific order, the prepared strips produced brilliant color transitions (astonishing colors, ranging from pistachio to bright yellow for Pi, from bright yellow to jacinth for NR and from jacinth to light orang...

Synthesis of silver nanoparticles from red and green parts of the pistachio hulls and their various in-vitro biological activities
In this study, synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was carried out utilizing the red and green parts of the pistachio hulls then their several biological activities were investigated. The DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate) activities of the AgNPs synthesized from red pistachio hulls extracts (PhR-AgNPs) and green pistachio hulls extracts (PhG-AgNPs) were investigated. The DPPH scavenging capability at 200 mg/L concentration of PhR-AgNPs was around 93.01% however PhG-AgNPs displayed 91.00%. The synthesized PhR-AgNPs and PhG-AgNPs acted on the E. coli plasmid DNA, causing its complete degradation and exhibit...

Investigation of the biological treatability of pistachio processing industry wastewaters in a batch-operated aerobic bioreactor
This study encompasses investigation of treatment of pistachio processing industry wastewaters in a batch reactor under aerobic conditions, calculation of kinetic parameters and comparison of different inhibition models. The mixed microorganism culture used in the study was adapted to pistachio processing industry wastewaters for nearly one month and then concentrations from 50 to 1000  mg L−1 of pistachio processing industry wastewaters were added to the medium and treatment was investigated in batch experiments. The Andrews, Han-Levenspiel, Luong and Aiba biokinetic equations were chosen for the correlations between t...

Prooxidative effect of cardols is involved in their cytotoxic activity against murine B16-F10 melanoma cells
Biochem Biophys Res Commun. 2022 Apr 10;609:105-110. doi: 10.1016/j.bbrc.2022.04.033. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCardols are resorcinolic lipids, available in many natural sources including cashew nut, pistachio, macadamia, and mango. Despite of several beneficial biological activities of cardols, cytotoxic activities of cardols are not fully understood. In preliminary studies, 5[8(Z),11(Z),14-pentadecatrienyl]resorcinol, known as cardol (C15:3) was found to inhibit tyrosinase-catalyzed melanin formation in cell-free system. In the case of cultured cell analysis, cardol (C15:3) showed intense cytotoxicity but not anti-m...

The effect of monitoring system on risk assessment of aflatoxins in Iran's pistachio nuts exported to the E.U. during 2012-2018
Pistachio has high nutritional value and popularity. The susceptibility of pistachio to aflatoxin contamination caused establishing a monitoring system introduced and implemented by the Ministry of Health in Iran to ensure consumers' access to safe and hygienic pistachios. In this research, aflatoxin contamination level in all consignments (7298) exporting to E.U. was examined using HPLC with fluorescence detection after immunoaffinity column clean up from Nov 2012 to Oct 2018. The average recoveries ranged 78.6%–97.6%, with a relative standard deviation for reproducibility below 8.5% and expanded uncertainty of ...
