A novel approach to seizures in neonates
Eur J Paediatr Neurol. 2023 Jul 27;46:89-97. doi: 10.1016/j.ejpn.2023.07.006. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTHE CHALLENGE OF SEIZURE RECOGNITION: Recognition of seizures in neonates remains the foremost challenge to overcome. All neonates at risk for seizures, especially the critically ill, should undergo video-EEG monitoring. The initial step toward an accurate diagnosis is the accurate description and interpretation of the electro-clinical phenotype. THE IMPORTANCE OF SEIZURE SEMIOLOGY AND ASSOCIATION WITH ETIOLOGY: The early distinction between acute provoked seizures and neonatal-onset epilepsies serves as the primary ...

Acute Valproate-Induced Encephalopathy in Status Epilepticus: A Registry-Based Assessment
ConclusionPending larger studies, VIE in SE seems relatively frequent and difficult to foresee; clinical alertness to symptoms is mandatory, even without hyperammonemia, and valproate withdrawal should be considered in suspected cases. (Source: CNS Drugs)

Paediatric medicine issues and gaps from healthcare workers point of view: survey results and a narrative review from the global accelerator for paediatric formulations project
The WHO Model List of Essential Medicines for Children (EMLc) has not been systematically revised in the last few years. We conducted a survey addressed to healthcare professionals prescribing, preparing, or administering medicines to children and a narrative review to identify problematic paediatric formulations or missing medicines in all therapeutic fields to inform the review of the EMLc in 2023. A total of 285 physicians (63%), 28 nurses (6%) and 142 pharmacists (31%), mostly working in the hospital setting, reported at least one problematic medicine. 290 medicines were reported as missing (completely or the child-app...

Using the LeiCNS-PK3.0 Physiologically-Based Pharmacokinetic Model to Predict Brain Extracellular Fluid Pharmacokinetics in Mice
ConclusionThe current version of the mouse LeiCNS-PK3.0 model seems to reasonably predict available information on brainECF from healthy mice for most drugs. This brings the translation between mouse and human brain PK one step further. (Source: Pharmaceutical Research)

Treatment of pediatric convulsive status epilepticus
Status epilepticus is one of the most common life-threatening neurological emergencies in childhood with the highest incidence in the first 5 years of life and high mortality and morbidity rates. Although it is known that a delayed treatment and a prolonged seizure can cause permanent brain damage, there is evidence that current treatments may be delayed and the medication doses administered are insufficient. Here, we summarize current knowledge on treatment of convulsive status epilepticus in childhood and propose a treatment algorithm. We performed a structured literature search via PubMed and ClinicalTrails.org and id...
