Antibiotics for treatment of leptospirosis
CONCLUSIONS: As the certainty of evidence is very low, we do not know if antibiotics provide little to no effect on all-cause mortality, serious adverse events, or adverse events considered non-serious. There is a lack of definitive rigorous data from randomised trials to support the use of antibiotics for treating leptospirosis infection, and the absence of trials reporting data on clinically relevant outcomes further adds to this limitation.PMID:38483092 | PMC:PMC10938876 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD014960.pub2 (Source: Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews)

Antibiotic prophylaxis for leptospirosis
CONCLUSIONS: We do not know if antibiotics versus placebo or another antibiotic has little or have no effect on all-cause mortality or leptospirosis infection because the certainty of evidence is low or very low. We do not know if antibiotics versus placebo may increase the overall risk of non-serious adverse events because of very low-certainty evidence. We lack definitive rigorous data from randomised trials to support the use of antibiotics for the prophylaxis of leptospirosis infection. We lack trials reporting data on clinically relevant outcomes.PMID:38483067 | PMC:PMC10938880 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD014959.pub2 (So...

Hemadsorption extracorporeal therapy removes cytokines ex vivo in horses
Am J Vet Res. 2024 Mar 18:1-8. doi: 10.2460/ajvr.24.01.0022. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOBJECTIVE: Plasma cytokine adsorption has shown benefit as an adjunctive therapy in human sepsis but has yet to be investigated in horses. We hypothesized that ex vivo filtration of equine plasma with a novel cytokine adsorption device would significantly reduce concentrations of lipopolysaccharide-stimulated cytokines. We also hypothesized that the device would adsorb medications commonly used to treat sepsis.ANIMALS: 8 horses owned by North Carolina State University.METHODS: Four liters of heparinized whole blood was collected from...

Outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) in Germany: insights and clinical outcomes from the K-APAT cohort study
ConclusionThe study demonstrates that OPAT can be safely conducted in Germany. In preparation for its broader implementation, crucial next steps include creating medical guidelines, fostering interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral communication, as well as creating financial and structural regulations that facilitate and encourage the adoption of OPAT.Trial registration numberNCT04002453. Serotype distribution and antimicrobial resistance of pediatric Streptococcus pneumoniae isolated from inpatients and outpatients at Beijing Children's Hospital
CONCLUSIONS: Pneumococcal vaccine-related serotypes are prevalent among both inpatients and outpatients, especially among inpatients, who exhibit more severe antibiotic resistance. Therefore, universal immunization with PCV13 would decrease the hospitalization rate due to S. pneumoniae and the antibiotic resistance rate of S. pneumoniae.PMID:38471654 | DOI:10.1016/j.bjid.2024.103734 (Source: Braz J Infect Dis)

One pot fabrication of diamino naphthalene -AuNPs decorated graphene nanoplatform for the MRSA detection in the biological sample
Bioelectrochemistry. 2024 Feb 28;157:108674. doi: 10.1016/j.bioelechem.2024.108674. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEarly monitoring of MRSA can effectively mitigate the disease risk by using Penicillin-binding protein 2a (PbP2a) biomarker. Diamino naphthalene-AuNPs decorated graphene (AuNPsGO-DN) nanocomposite was synthesized for a rapid and sensitive immunosensor detecting PbP2a. The synthesized AuNPsGO-DN nanocomposites were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray di...

Secondary syphilis presenting as fever of unknown origin
Image of patient's maculopapular syphilitic rash on palmar surface of his hand, which developed about 8  weeks into his fever. Key Clinical MessageA thirty-eight year-old male presented with a seven-week history of persistent fever accompanied by recurrent night sweats, chills, arthralgias, headache, and chest tightness.Initial laboratory testing showed non-specific elevation of inflammatory markers, but was otherwise unremarkable.A palmar rash developed one week later, prompting testing for syphilis. Fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption (FTA-ABS) and rapid plasma reagin (RPR) tests were both positive.Penicillin G ...

Clinical and microbiological profile of Viridans group streptococcal bacteraemia; experience from South India
CONCLUSIONS: VGS are an important cause of bacteraemia and was associated with 19% mortality in our study. High rates of penicillin and ceftriaxone resistance are a reason of concern. Molecular diagnostics like matrix assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) identification must be increasingly applied for species identification considering that a substantial number of isolates were not identified to species level.PMID:38456022 | PMC:PMC10917554 | DOI:10.53854/liim-3201-5 (Source: Infezioni in Medicina)
