Microsurgery in carotid body paraganglioma
CONCLUSIONS: The small study size and its retrospective nature suggests caution; however, our results show that microsurgery can allow a safe and precise dissection of the carotids and nerves.PMID:38651551 | PMC:PMC11042556 | DOI:10.14639/0392-100X-N2761 (Source: Acta Otorhinolaryngologica Italica)

High-Specific-Activity 131I-MIBG for the Treatment of Advanced Pheochromocytoma and Paraganglioma
CONCLUSIONS: HSA-131I-MIBG is associated with a high DCR in patients with MPPGL, regardless of underlying genetic mutation.PMID:38630996 | DOI:10.1097/RLU.0000000000005184 (Source: Cancer Control)

Cauda equina neuroendocrine tumor: a report of three cases and review of the literature with focus on differential diagnosis and postoperative management
We report on three patients, two of them presenting with a clinical history of lower back pain and sciatica. In all cases magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the lumbosacral spine with and without Gd-DTPA revealed an intradural lesion with strong contrast enhancement, first described as atypical ependymoma or schwannoma. A complete tumor resection was achieved in all cases, the histopathological diagnosis classified the tumors as CENETs.In our literature review, a total of 688 articles were screened and 162 patients were included. Patients demographic data, clinical symptoms, resection and recurrence were recorded.Discussi...

Diagnostic performance of [68Ga]DOTATATE PET/CT, [18F]FDG PET/CT, MRI of the spine, and whole-body diagnostic CT and MRI in the detection of spinal bone metastases associated with pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma
Conclusions[68Ga]DOTATATE PET/CT should be the modality of choice in PPGL-related spinal bone metastases due to its superior detection rate.Clinical relevance statementIn a prospective study of 43 pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma participants with spinal bone metastases, [68Ga]DOTATATE PET/CT had a superior per-lesion detection rate of 98.7% (377/382), compared to [18F]FDG PET/CT (p <  0.001), MRI of the spine (p <  0.001), whole-body CT (p <  0.001), and whole-body MRI (p <  0.001).Graphical abstractKey Points• Data regarding head-to-head comparison between functional and anatomic imaging modal...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1523: Head and Neck Paragangliomas: Overview of Institutional Experience
Brant Yonghong Huan Head and neck paragangliomas (HNPGLs) are rare and have high rates of genetic mutations. We conducted a retrospective review of 187 patients with 296 PGLs diagnosed between 1974 and 2023. The mean age of diagnosis was 48.8 years (range 10 to 82) with 69.0% female and 26.5% patients with multiple PGLs. Among 119 patients undergoing genetic testing, 70 (58.8%) patients had mutations, with SDHB (30) and SDHD (26) being the most common. The rates of metastasis and recurrence were higher among patients with SHDB mutations or SDHD mutations associated with multiple PGLs. Metabolic evaluation showed elev...

Paraaortic Extra-Adrenal Paraganglioma: Challenging Robotic Resection
CONCLUSIONS: Robotic-assisted resection can be safe and effective for retroperitoneal malignant paragangliomas. However, management extends beyond surgery and requires cascade genetic testing to address familial risks. Because of the high probability of cancer associated with SDHB mutation, lifelong patient surveillance is imperative.PMID:38615151 | DOI:10.1245/s10434-024-15267-z (Source: Ann Oncol)

Opposing effects of cannabidiol in patient-derived neuroendocrine tumor, pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma primary cultures
CONCLUSIONS: We suggest a potential novel treatment option for some NETs/PPGLs, but also provide evidence for caution when applying cannabinoids as supportive therapy for pain or appetite management to cancer patients, and possibly as health supplements.PMID:38605427 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgae241 (Source: The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism)
