A Retrospective Study Analyzing Opioid Prescription Practices in Hand Surgery from 2013 to 2019
CONCLUSIONS: The increase in total opioid prescriptions from 2013 to 2019 by hand surgeons in the Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Program lags behind the recommended shift to nonopioid pain management. The reasons for the overall rise in prescriptions deserve further exploration.PMID:37744675 | PMC:PMC10516388 | DOI:10.1097/GOX.0000000000005218 (Source: Hand Surgery)

The Analgesic Mismanagement of a Patient With Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (Hypermobility Variant): A Case Report
Cureus. 2023 Sep 21;15(9):e45713. doi: 10.7759/cureus.45713. eCollection 2023 Sep.ABSTRACTEhlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a rare disorder affecting the connective tissue, resulting in joint hypermobility, elastic skin, and often chronic pain, especially in the hypermobility variant. Although opioids are commonly prescribed for pain, they can lead to opioid use disorder (OUD) and overdose. A 67-year-old female with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome hypermobility type (EDS-HT), osteoarthritis (OA), and anxiety received opioid-based pain management for a decade before changing her primary care physician. Her medications included oxycodo...

CYP2D6 ‐guided opioid therapy for adults with cancer pain: A randomized implementation clinical trial
ConclusionOur study revealed high acceptance of pharmacogenetic testing as part of a clinical trial among patients with cancer pain. However, provider response to genotype-guided recommendations was low, impacting assessment of pain-related outcomes. Addressing barriers to utility of pharmacogenetics results and clinical recommendations will be critical for implementation success. Tapentadol versus Oxycodone for Opioid-related Adverse Drug Events and Clinical Outcomes After Inpatient Surgery
Oxycodone is a commonly prescribed opioid for postoperative pain. However, there has been a marked increase in the use of tapentadol over the previous decade due to a perceived superior safety profile of tapentadol compared to oxycodone. There is limited real-world evidence on the safety of tapentadol compared to oxycodone after surgery. The primary objective was to examine the impact of tapentadol compared to oxycodone use on the incidence of opioid-related adverse drug events after surgery. Data for adult surgical patients receiving tapentadol or oxycodone during hospitalisation between 1 January 2018 and 31 December 202...

Opioid-free percutaneous nephrolithotomy: an initial experience
ConclusionOur results show that there were no significant differences in pain-related encounters between those who received ketorolac and oxycodone –acetaminophen following PCNL. A non-opioid pathway may mitigate the potential risk associated with opioid prescription without compromising analgesia. Prospective comparative studies are warranted to confirm feasibility. Oxycodone alleviates mifepristone ‐stimulated human endometrial stromal cell injury by activating the Keap1/Nrf2/HO‐1 signaling pathway
ConclusionIn summary, we confirmed that oxycodone alleviates mifepristone-induced hEndoSC injury by activating the Keap1/Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway. (Source: Immunity, Inflammation and Disease)

Ghrelin receptor antagonist JMV2959 blunts cocaine and oxycodone drug-seeking, but not self-administration, in male rats
The drug overdose crisis has spawned serious health consequences, including the increased incidence of substance use disorders (SUDs), conditions manifested by escalating medical and psychological impairments. While medication management is a key adjunct in SUD treatment, this crisis has crystallized the need to develop additional therapeutics to facilitate extended recovery from SUDs. The “hunger hormone” ghrelin acts by binding to the growth hormone secretagogue receptor 1α (GHS1αR) to control homeostatic and hedonic aspects of food intake and has been implicated in the mechanisms underlying SUDs. Preclinical studi...

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 1948: Novel RNA-Seq Signatures Post-Methamphetamine and Oxycodone Use in a Model of HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorders
dutt Pendyala In the 21st century, the effects of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) have been significantly reduced in individuals due to the development of antiretroviral therapies (ARTs). However, the growing epidemic of polysubstance use (PSU) has led to concern for the effects of PSU on HIV-seropositive individuals. To effectively treat individuals affected by HAND, it is critical to understand the biological mechanisms affected by PSU, including the identification of novel markers. To fill this important knowledge gap, we used an in vivo HIV-1 Transgenic (HIV-1 Tg) animal model to investigate the effe...

Potential Drug Interactions in Terminally-Ill Cancer Patients, a Report from the Middle East
This study aims to evaluate the epidemiology of potential drug interactions in terminally-ill cancer patients receiving exclusively supportive care. In this cross-sectional study, during a 6-month follow-up, we considered the medical record of terminally-ill cancer patients referred to palliative care at the cancer center in Isfahan, Iran. Potential drug-drug interactions (DDIs) were assessed by Lexi-Interact ver.1.1 online software. During the study period, 133 terminally-ill cancer patients were recruited. We detected 1678 DDIs with moderate or major severity levels. Among them, 330, 219, 32, 1075, and 51 interactions we...
