Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 1918: Synthetic Cinnamides and Cinnamates: Antimicrobial Activity, Mechanism of Action, and In Silico Study
Sousa The severity of infectious diseases associated with the resistance of microorganisms to drugs highlights the importance of investigating bioactive compounds with antimicrobial potential. Therefore, nineteen synthetic cinnamides and cinnamates having a cinnamoyl nucleus were prepared and submitted for the evaluation of antimicrobial activity against pathogenic fungi and bacteria in this study. To determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the compounds, possible mechanisms of antifungal action, and synergistic effects, microdilution testing in broth was used. The structures of the synthesized product...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 1836: Antifungal Properties of Biogenic Selenium Nanoparticles Functionalized with Nystatin for the Inhibition of Candida albicans Biofilm Formation
atil Guoyin Kai In the present study, biogenic selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) have been prepared using Paenibacillus terreus and functionalized with nystatin (SeNP@PVP_Nystatin nanoconjugates) for inhibiting growth, morphogenesis, and a biofilm in Candida albicans. Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy analysis has shown a characteristic absorption at 289, 303, and 318 nm, and X-ray diffraction analysis has shown characteristic peaks at different 2θ values for SeNPs. Electron microscopy analysis has shown that biogenic SeNPs are spherical in shape with a size in the range of 220–2...

Chronic Mucocutaneous Candidiasis: A Case Report
This study reported a case of CMC in a child with clinical manifestations of oral mucosal leukoplakia and erythema and crust-like thick scabs on the skin of the face and upper limbs. Microscopic fungal examination revealed a large amount of pseudohyphae, and the fungal culture indicated Candida albicans. A drug sensitivity test indicated that it was sensitive to itraconazole and nystatin. Laboratory tests did not show significant immunodeficiency or endocrine abnormalities, and gene sequencing did not identify DNA gene mutations in the coiled-coil domain (CCD) or the DNA-binding domain (DBD) of signal transducer and activa...

Alginate oligosaccharides enhance the antifungal activity of nystatin against candidal biofilms
ConclusionsAntimicrobial synergy between OligoG and nystatin against Candida spp. highlights the potential utility of this combination therapy in the prevention and topical treatment of candidal biofilm infections, to overcome the inherent tolerance of biofilm structures to antifungal agents. A case of Candida metapsilosis conjunctivitis in a neonate admitted to the cardiac heart intensive care unit
We report the first case ofCandida conjunctivitis due toC. metapsilosis obtained from the eye discharge of a 40-day-old girl with congenital heart disease admitted to the cardiac intensive care unit (CICU). The yeast isolate was identified by sequencing the entire ITS1-5.8 rRNA-ITS2 region. Antifungal susceptibility testing performed according to the CLSI M27-A3 showed that the isolate was susceptible to amphotericin  B, fluconazole, itraconazole, voriconazole, clotrimazole, nystatin, terbinafine, 5-fluorocytosine, and caspofungin. Differentiation of the fungal new species allows us the accurate diagnosis and treatment, a...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 711: Fungicidal Activity of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles against Azole-Resistant Aspergillus flavus Isolated from Yellow and White Maize
In this report, we isolated and identified azole-resistant A. flavus isolates from two sources of maize (white and yellow maize). The susceptibilities of Aspergillus flavus isolates were investigated by conventional antifungals such as Terbinfine, Fluconazole, Ketoconazole, Voricazole, Amphotericin, and Nystatin. Then zinc oxide nanoparticles associated with Chlorella vulgaris, which are synthesized by using the precipitation method, were examined against isolated fungi. The results showed that twelve species of white corn were isolated out of fifty isolates, while the number of isolates from the yellow corn source was onl...

Clinical and morphopathological assay in vulvovaginal candidiasis
Rom J Morphol Embryol. 2022 Jul-Sep;63(3):511-520. doi: 10.47162/RJME.63.3.05.ABSTRACTCandida vulvovaginitis is characterized by the appearance of inflammatory changes in the vaginal and vulvar epithelium secondary to infection with Candida species. The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the clinical, microbiological, and histopathological aspects of pregnant and non-pregnant patients, symptomatic or asymptomatic in the case of candida vaginitis and to correlate the microscopic aspects with the symptoms before applying the local treatment with Nystatin. The study presents a retrospective analysis of the manag...
