On the size-dependent internalization of sub-hundred polymeric nanoparticles
In this study, we exploited a microfluidics device to synthesize homogeneous suspensions of NPs with ≈ 30, 50, and 70 nm of size. Afterward, we investigated their level and mechanism of internalization when exposed to different types of cells (endothelial cells, macrophages, and fibroblasts). Our results show that all NPs were cytocompatible and internalized by the different cell types. However, NPs uptake was size-dependent, being the maximum uptake efficiency observed for the 30 nm NPs. Moreover, we demonstrate that size can lead to distinct interactions with different cells. For instance, 30 nm NPs were internalized w...

CYP broth: a tool for Yersinia pestis isolation in ancient culture collections and field samples
Appl Microbiol Biotechnol. 2023 Mar 10. doi: 10.1007/s00253-023-12452-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe developed a simple new selective LB-based medium, named CYP broth, suitable for recovering long-term stored Y. pestis subcultures and for isolation of Y. pestis strains from field-caught samples for the Plague surveillance. It aimed to inhibit the growth contaminating microorganisms and enrich Y. pestis growth through iron supplementation. The performance of CYP broth on microbial growth from different gram-negative and gram-positive strains from American Type Culture Collection (ATCC®) and other clinical isolates, fi...

Candida albicans-specific Th17 cell-mediated response contributes to alcohol-associated liver disease
Cell Host Microbe. 2023 Mar 8;31(3):389-404.e7. doi: 10.1016/j.chom.2023.02.001.ABSTRACTAlcohol-associated liver disease is accompanied by intestinal mycobiome dysbiosis, yet the impacts on liver disease are unclear. We demonstrate that Candida albicans-specific T helper 17 (Th17) cells are increased in circulation and present in the liver of patients with alcohol-associated liver disease. Chronic ethanol administration in mice causes migration of Candida albicans (C. albicans)-reactive Th17 cells from the intestine to the liver. The antifungal agent nystatin decreased C. albicans-specific Th17 cells in the liver and reduc...

Design and Synthesis of 1,3-Diynes as Potent Antifungal Agents Against Aspergillus fumigatus
ChemMedChem. 2023 Feb 28:e202300013. doi: 10.1002/cmdc.202300013. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEugenol and isoeugenol, secondary metabolites isolated from the plant Myristica fragrans have displayed antifungal activities against Aspergillus fumigatus (IC50 1900 μM). Compounds having conjugated unsaturation have been of great use as antifungals i.e. amphotericin B, nystatin and terbinafine etc. Hence, in the present study, we have designed and synthesised 1,3-diynes by utilizing Glaser-Hay and Cadiot-Chodkiewicz coupling reactions to furnish possible antifungal agents. Synthesis of 1,6-diphenoxyhexa-2,4-diyne derivatives ...
