Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe COVID-19 pandemic compounded isolation for patients through social distancing measures and staff shortages. We were concerned about the impact of COVID-19 on the quality of care provided at end-of-life in 2021 in a national cancer centre, and instigated the first ever review of the care of the dying. Quality of care was assessed retrospectively using a validated instrument developed by the United Kingdom's National Quality Board. Sixty-six patient deaths occurred in our cancer centre in 2021. The 'risk of dying' ...

Latent class symptom profiles of colorectal cancer survivors with cancer-related cognitive impairment
CONCLUSION: Our study adds to the information on interindividual variability in symptom experience of CRC survivors with cognitive impairment. Findings suggest a need for increased attention to screening for co-occurring symptoms (e.g., high pain) and future interventions focused on stress management and social support.PMID:37668747 | DOI:10.1007/s00520-023-08031-8 (Source: Cancer Control)

Cancers, Vol. 15, Pages 4414: Depression, Inflammation, and Intestinal Permeability: Associations with Subjective and Objective Cognitive Functioning throughout Breast Cancer Survivorship
einbolt Sagar D. Sardesai Anne M. Noonan Daniel G. Stover Mathew A. Cherian William B. Malarkey Janice K. Kiecolt-Glaser About one-in-three breast cancer survivors have lingering cognitive complaints and objective cognitive impairment. Chronic inflammation and intestinal permeability (i.e., leaky gut), two risk factors for cognitive decline, can also fuel depression—another vulnerability for cognitive decline. The current study tested whether depression accompanied by high levels of inflammation or intestinal permeability predicted lower subjective and objective cognitive function in breast ca...

A systematic review of qualitative evidence: Perspectives of fathers whose partner experienced postpartum psychosis
CONCLUSION: Postpartum psychosis is a severe mental health condition which also impacts the woman's partner. Fathers experienced an array of emotions which they attributed to a lack of knowledge and understanding of postpartum psychosis. The development of appropriate support structures is needed to better support fathers in supporting their partners.REPORTING METHOD: This review adhered to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis statement and ENTREQ reporting guidelines.PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: There was no patient or public contribution.IMPACT: WHAT PROBLEM DID THIS STUDY ADDRESS?: Fathe...

Noonan syndrome and implications related to endocrine follow-up and coordination of care
Noonan syndrome (NS) is a genetic condition with a prevalence of 1:1000 -2500. NS is a variably expressed, multisystem disorder. Individuals may experience blood clotting abnormalities, congenital heart defects including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and pulmonary valve stenosis, malformations of lymph vessels, short stature, autoimmune thyroiditis, impaired feeding with failure to thrive, and learning disorders. Due to the inconsistencies in presentation, these patients require multidisciplinary care including pediatric endocrinology. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Nursing)

IJERPH, Vol. 20, Pages 6676: Risk Factors of Health-Related Quality of Life among Gastrointestinal Cancer Survivors in the U.S.: With a Focus on Social and Behavioral Determinants of Health (SBDH)
Conclusions: The SBDH has a critical role in HRQoL. Future studies are warranted to develop a tailored survivorship intervention, such as physical rehabilitation, and to explore machine learning/artificial intelligence-based predictive models to identify cancer survivors at a high risk of developing poor HRQoL. A novel device for atrial septal defect occlusion (GORE CARDIOFORM)
EuroIntervention. 2023 Aug 23:EIJ-D-23-00378. doi: 10.4244/EIJ-D-23-00378. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe GORE CARDIOFORM atrial septal defect (ASD) Occluder (GCA) is composed of a platinum-filled nitinol wire frame covered with expanded polytetrafluoroethylene, making it softer and more conformable compared with nitinol mesh devices. After the ASSURED clinical study confirmed the efficacy and safety of the device, it received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval and a European conformity mark. Our aim was to understand the learning curve implicated in using the GCA for ASD closure in paediatric and adult patients...
