Antidepressants for the treatment of depression in people with cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Despite the impact of depression on people with cancer, the available studies were few and of low quality. This review found a potential beneficial effect of antidepressants against placebo in depressed participants with cancer. However, the certainty of evidence is very low and, on the basis of these results, it is difficult to draw clear implications for practice. The use of antidepressants in people with cancer should be considered on an individual basis and, considering the lack of head-to-head data, the choice of which drug to prescribe may be based on the data on antidepressant efficacy in the general po...

The risks of adverse events with venlafaxine and mirtazapine versus ‘active placebo’, placebo, or no intervention for adults with major depressive disorder: a protocol for two separate systematic reviews with meta-analysis and Trial Sequential Analysis
DiscussionVenlafaxine and mirtazapine are frequently used as second-line treatment of major depressive disorder worldwide. There is a need for a thorough systematic review to provide the necessary background for weighing the benefits against the harms. This review will ultimately inform best practice in the treatment of major depressive disorder.Systematic review registrationPROSPERO CRD42022315395. (Source: Systematic Reviews)

Mirtazepine, an atypical antidepressant, mitigates lung fibrosis by suppressing NLPR3 inflammasome and fibrosis-related mediators in endotracheal bleomycin rat model
Biomed Pharmacother. 2023 Mar 17;161:114553. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2023.114553. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIdiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive and irreversible lung disease with a poor prognosis. There is currently no definitive cure for IPF. The present study establishes a platform for the development of a novel therapeutic approach for the treatment of PF using the atypical antidepressant, mirtazapine. In the endotracheal bleomycin rat model, mirtazapine interfered with the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome via downregulating the NLRP3 on the gene and protein expression levels. Accordingly, the downstr...

Successful treatment of HIV-associated progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) with mirtazapine, mefloquine, and IVIG combination therapy: a case report
AbstractProgressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a severe demyelinating disease of the central nervous system caused by reactivation of the polyomavirus JC (JCV). Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is one of the leading causes of PML which has high morbidity and mortality due to the lack of a proven standard treatment. We found clinical and radiological improvement with the combination of high-dose methylprednisolone, mirtazapine, mefloquine, and IVIG in our patient who presented with neurological symptoms and had diagnosed concurrent acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and PML. To our knowledge,...

Antidepressant drugs use and epilepsy risk: A nationwide nested case-control study
CONCLUSIONS: The study found an increased risk of epilepsy among patients who were exposed to any ADs, particularly longer-term users. Given the nature of observational studies with residual bias, interpretation should be cautious.PMID:36745964 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2023.109102 (Source: Epilepsy and Behaviour)

Antidepressant treatment initiation and public sick-leave compensation in the following year: a register-based prospective cohort study in Denmark
CONCLUSIONS: Antidepressant treatment initiation was associated with PLSC. The highest risk of PLSC was seen for antidepressants with sedative side effects. Some types of antidepressants were associated with a lower risk of PLSC in the year following treatment initiation.PMID:36734806 | DOI:10.1080/08039488.2023.2173289 (Source: Nordic Journal of Psychiatry)
