Differential contribution of 5-HT < sub > 4 < /sub > , 5-HT < sub > 5 < /sub > , and 5-HT < sub > 6 < /sub > receptors to acute pruriceptive processing induced by chloroquine and histamine in mice
Biol Pharm Bull. 2023 Sep 16. doi: 10.1248/bpb.b23-00445. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe involvement of serotonin (5-HT) and/or noradrenaline in acute pruriceptive processing in the central nervous system (CNS) has been reported using antidepressants, such as milnacipran, a serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor, and mirtazapine, a noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressant; however, the roles of 5-HT receptor family in acute pruriceptive processing have not been fully elucidated in the CNS. In the present study, scratching behavior induced by chloroquine (CQ) was ameliorated by milnacipran or mirtaz...

Usefulness of mirtazapine and SSRIs in late-life depression: post hoc analysis of the GUNDAM study
ConclusionThe potential usefulness of mirtazapine in elderly patients was demonstrated. The results also showed differences in the treatment response to SSRIs and mirtazapine between elderly and non-elderly patients. (Source: European Journal of Clinical Pharmacology)

Sedative drug-use in Denmark, 2000 to 2019: a nationwide drug utilization study
ConclusionIn Denmark different central regulations have influenced prescription practice toward more restrictive use of Z-drugs and benzodiazepines, except for hypnotic benzodiazepine prescriptions increased after the introduction of special palliative care. An increase in use of newer sedative drugs, however, indicates that the regulations do not remove the need for sedative drugs in the population. Environmentally relevant concentrations of antidepressant mirtazapine impair the neurodevelopment of zebrafish (Danio rerio)
Ecotoxicol Environ Saf. 2023 Aug 8;262:115335. doi: 10.1016/j.ecoenv.2023.115335. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMirtazapine is a commonly prescribed antidepressant and has been found widespread in aquatic environments. However, its toxicities to aquatic organisms has rarely been explored. Herein, we conducted a comprehensive study on the developmental effects of mirtazapine on early life stages of zebrafish at environmentally relevant concentrations (3.9 ng/L and 43.5 ng/L). Out of the endpoints measured, spontaneous contraction of embryos at 24 h post fertilization (hpf) and hatching rate and heart rate of embryos at 50 h...

Simultaneous separation and determination of several chiral antidepressants and their enantiomers in wastewater by online heart-cutting two-dimensional liquid chromatography
Ecotoxicol Environ Saf. 2023 Jul 26;263:115302. doi: 10.1016/j.ecoenv.2023.115302. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA novel method for simultaneous separation and detection of the racemates and the enantiomers of common chiral antidepressants in wastewater matrix was developed by online heart-cutting two-dimensional liquid chromatography (2D-LC) coupled to solid-phase extraction (SPE). Screening of chiral stationary phases (CSPs) and chromatographic conditions was investigated for complete enantioseparation to be compatible with RP-HPLC in 1st D-LC. Using methanol-0.1 % (v/v) ammonia solution as mobile phase, a 2D-LC system w...

Cancers, Vol. 15, Pages 3588: Mirtazapine versus Megestrol in the Treatment of Anorexia & ndash;Cachexia Syndrome in Patients with Advanced Cancer: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Controlled Phase II Clinical Trial
This study compared mirtazapine with megestrol in the management of cancer-related anorexia–cachexia syndrome in patients with advanced cancer. A randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trial involving patients with advanced cancer and anorexia–cachexia syndrome was performed. Participants received mirtazapine 30 mg/day or megestrol 320 mg/day for eight weeks. The primary endpoint was the effect of mirtazapine on weight gain and the secondary endpoints were its effect on appetite, muscle strength, physical performance, body composition, adverse events, and medication adherence. Linear regr...
