Calculating science GPA, do my classes count?
My first question is if science GPA will count masters programs grades like overall GPA does, or is it only undergrad grades? If it counts masters grades too, I'm a little torn on whether or not some of my classes will count as a science class. all my classes I'm taking start with microbiology, but some of them are classes like journal club, research ethics, or clinical cases. Is science GPA only considering anything that starts with micro or does it depend on the actual name of the class... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

When a school asks for 3 to 5 or 6ish letters, is it better to just send 3 or should you try to meet in the middle?
I'm researching LoR requirements for some schools, and it looks like most schools I'm applying to simply require 3 to 5 or 6 letters, with some also preferring a letter from a clinician. In this case, is it better to just keep it small and send 2 science letters and 1 MD letter (a doctor I worked close with)? Or, is it better to try to meet in the middle and sent maybe 4ish letters (3 academic, 1 MD)? The doc said he'll write me a strong letter talking about my work ethic, respect for... Ethics Violation and Medical School Application
I recently got involved in an ethics case where I used my roommates old prelabs for Physics Lab at the beginning of the semester. However, the context to this is that I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer last Fall and have been really overwhelmed with my health challenges, causing me to fall very behind in physics and the associated lab. Specifically, I had a major surgery before the start of semester and school was not a priority for me during this time, if I'm being honest. My professor... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Ethics Violation
hi all! so i recently reported a professor for a research violation at my school (not going to go into more detail for privacy sake). this professor is attached to the medical school, though I am unsure if she is directly involved in admissions (though it is possible). It is likely this professor is going to receive a pretty substantial warning (but she is unlikely to get fired, though she might lose funding / have her studies much more closely reviewed monitored). It is possible that the... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Crisis Text Line selling data to for-profit company
Suicide hotline shares data with for-profit spinoff, raising ethical questions - POLITICO The Crisis Text Line’s AI-driven chat service has gathered troves of data from its conversations with people suffering life’s toughest situations. www.politico.com I know as a suicidologist and clinician, I'm supposed to be in favor of these, but honestly, I'm beginning to think that they are a lot more iatrogenic than we'd like to admit, between stuff like this, doxxing callers, etc. Thoughts? Patient self-referral
Long story short, is it ethically / lawfully legal to refer patients to yourselves? For example, you are double board certified for internal medicine and GI. Let say you work in a primary care clinic affiliated with hospital from M-Th, and then Friday u work as a GI in your own private clinic. And so you refer all those pts >50 yo to yourself on Friday for colonoscopy. Of course this is just an example, and can be applied to any other specialties, for example IM and surgery. what about if... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Thoughts on physician aid in dying for SPMI?
Curious as to your thoughts on if physician aid in dying (aka physician assisted suicide aka death with dignity) should be legal/ethical for people with SPMI—as a suicide researcher, I started out firmly in the “no” camp but have honestly moved towards the “yes” camp as I’ve moved through my career and gained clinical experience. If someone has a non-terminal chronic illness that has been through adequate treatment trials and their condition either hasn’t responded to tx or their residual... Husband taking residency for cosmetic procedures, but I'm unsure on the ethics
My husband wants to take on a residency doing this crazy height increasing surgery https://leglengtheningsurgery.com/ as well as congenital cases. Now I whole heartedly support people fixing their leg discrepancies, but I think it's a bit crazy to operate on a healthy patient who just wants to be taller. Maybe I don't understand enough about the troubles people face with their height, but regardless, I don't think this is a viable solution and this is really tearing us a part. I've read up on some studies about the... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Publication ethics question
Hi all, Sort of an odd situation here: -Manuscript was submitted to a journal and rejected despite positive reviews due to perceived goodness of fit. -One co-author recently accepted a government position that keeps them from being an author on manuscripts submitted after they accepted the position, meaning that we have to take them off the resubmission. -I have strong professional ethical feelings about being on a manuscript with uncredited co-authors, even with their permission. Like, I... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Gamsat advice: How to best prepare (very long post)
In conclusion (feel like I'm wrapping up a GAMSAT essay here haha), don't give up. Just because you think you may not be good enough for this exam does not mean you aren't. Work hard and at the end of the day, the best you can do is try. Simply the fact that you're sitting the exam and putting yourself through the stress and pressure already shows that you have one of the traits of a worthy doctor. Good luck :) (Source: The Student Room)
