Goro's guide to the app process (2019 ed.)
So application season is upon us once again. I have some tips for you. Grab a cup of coffee, pull up a chair. What do we Adcoms look for? People who will make good doctors and will be good students. But to be the former, you have to be the latter. Evidence for doing well in med school is evidenced by an applicant with above average grades and MCAT score, evidence of a good work ethic, strong time management skills, reasonable expectations of what it means to have a career in medicine... Started doing UWorld and COMBANK and getting wrecked
I'm an OMSII and just started on USMLE and COMBANK questions. I've been trying to do 5 a day based on systems we've covered durning M1, and just general topics, biostats, etc. And I'd hate to say it but I'm getting wrecked. Usually scoring like 40-50% when the average is 60% or so. Some of the time its either old OMM stuff I know I need to review, professionalism/ethics related stuff we haven't covered (FA has stuff on this I assume?), or anatomy. Is this normal or does this not bode well... Started doing UWorld and COMBANK and getting wrecked (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Ethical Dilemma
I would like to get your opinion on a situation I came across with while reading a book: If you're in an accident with a person who you know is HIV positive, would you help him knowing that you don't have any protective equipment? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Sage advice for ethical interactions with Industry...
It seems like advice in this area for residents, fellows, and new grads is valuable. Perhaps some of the seasoned pain doctors can share their pearls. I'll start: 1) When Industry pays you, you're being paid to do a job. 2) Quid pro quo makes the world goes round. It's about relationships. 3) If it sounds like BS, it probably is. 4) You probably *ARE* the smartest person in the room, but don't think for a minute that you've earned the right to be heard and respected. 5) Don't take your... RN Student Walks Out to Protest Climate Change
Breaking... We get MA students and nursing students from the junior college rotating through our office from time to time. They get to practice taking vitals, rooming patients and doing IV starts. This AM the off-site preceptor texted me and said that one of her students would like to be excused in the afternoon to participate in a local demonstration against climate change. I am being asked to excuse the absence. I will not. I believe that an essential ethic to internalize in one's... RN Student Walks Out to Protest Climate Change (Source: Student Doctor Network)

MMI questions
Are MMI questions more like ethical scenarios, stuff from your application, or like "tell me a time you etc.."? I'm asking this for UMich and UCLA if it matters. How many days in advance do i have to prepare? For most of my regular interviews I haven't been preparing much other than rereading my primary/secondary essays the night before. What do I need to do to prepare for MMI? I have my first one coming up soon which is why I ask. (Source: Student Doctor Network)
