Strong Recommendation Letters
by 2bdoc (Posted Fri Jul 05, 2013 10:39 pm)Hello,So I submitted my primary application; GPA of 3.68 and, BCPM 3.49. I will be taking the MCAT this month, and am nervous, I have been studying for quite a while but started to really hit it hard the past couple of months. For some reason when I take practice tests my scores are low, around 25. The rest of my application is pretty strong, I have great extracurriculars that I have enjoyed being a part of, have research experience, and good volunteer/shadowing experiences. I am just wondering how much weight is put on recommendation letters; they are strong especially one that I...

What is the difference between Premed and other majors?
by DNambiar (Posted Fri Jun 28, 2013 1:38 pm)Another thing to add is that some medical schools have unique requirements in addition to the standard sets of "premed" classes that are expected of applicants. It is best to check with the admissions offices/websites of schools that you are potentially interested in to be sure that you have fulfilled all the pre-requisite coursework. For example, not all schools require that you take a biochemistry course during undergrad, but if you are majoring in biology and chemistry, it is probable that you will do so anyway. As Adminaoum and elitea said, make sure to check with your advis...

Any hope for me if I want to go to medical school?
by Brady Kinesia (Posted Fri Jun 21, 2013 1:27 pm)I think generally what you need to do is - Be a full-time student in a post-bac program to complete all the premed requirements - Get very high grades and very high MCAT, then your age, per se, is not going to prevent you from getting in to med school somewhere. - Like the previous author said, you have a little bit extra to explain, a little bit extra to prove - why did you decide to make this big change, what have you done that is relevant to medicine, etc. (Source: Med Student Guide)

Most Difficult MCAT Topics
by foville1859 (Posted Thu Jun 20, 2013 6:02 am)Physical sciences I thought was not so bad because it's well-defined, either you know the equations and concepts or you don't. Whereas Bio depends more on memorization of facts that cannot be generalized. There was one section in the Bio part of my MCAT that had several question on nitric oxide, I was surprised because the answers to that topic were not even known until fairly recently. And I wouldn't have gotten them right if I had not coincidentally done some lab research on nitric oxide myself. It seems like sometimes they throw in some questions like that at the end of the...

Got in, but failed a class during my last undergrad quarter
by GrossFTW (Posted Mon Jun 17, 2013 8:59 am)I was accepted to med school on February 14, 2013. This was, of course, contingent on the maintenance of good grades and the eventual completion of my degree in the spring. This quarter, I decided to take Immuno as an upper div bio course applicable towards my degree. I had heard bad things about class/professor, but thought that I could at least pass the class. Last week I took the final (40% of my grade) and I'm pretty sure I bombed it. People that have never failed a science class before have gone into her class and failed. The way she tests (short answer and essay) and grade...
