Organic Chemistry Junior Year vs. Sophomore Year
by nnoorani1 (Posted Sun Jul 28, 2013 2:06 pm)I am a rising sophomore and am debating whether or not to take organic chemistry next year. Does it matter whether we take organic chemistry sophomore or junior year? I feel like I would be better accustomed to the rigors of college junior year. Instead of organic chemistry, I would take physics. This means that I would still be able to take the MCAT my junior year and apply my senior year, if I chose to go to medical school immediately after graduation. (Source: Med Student Guide)

Should you retake the MCAT?
by Brady Kinesia (Posted Wed Jul 24, 2013 4:07 pm)Amanda 845: As for the total score, I would say, don't retake it, because you were lucky to get a 14 on the Bio and, although you might improve the Verbal, the Bio would probably go down if you retake. However, if the test date of 2011 is going to limit your range of schools to apply to, then you should retake, because you should apply to a broad range of schools (Source: Med Student Guide)

My Chances of getting into Med School next year for URM?
by Brady Kinesia (Posted Tue Jul 23, 2013 1:54 am)Hi Nicole, I agree with the previous author about the extent to which you can predict it at this point. But actually, there is a tool on this website that gives you some estimates about what range of schools your application would be numerically 'competitive' at. Example, put in a hypothetical GPA 3.3, with MCAT 30, then it tells you how that compares to the average numbers at each school on the list. It lists many allopathic medical schools - Brady (Source: Med Student Guide)

What are my chances of getting into med school?
by Brady Kinesia (Posted Tue Jul 23, 2013 1:49 am)I would focus on science grades and on MCAT preparation. I think you've already done enough extracurricular activities, and doing more to try to impress in the application won't help you if the numbers just don't make the cut. Also, could you take more time to work on those things, or is there a reason why you pretty much have to apply next year? (Source: Med Student Guide)

What are my chances of getting into med school?
by Nicoley90 (Posted Thu Jul 18, 2013 7:40 am)I just recently graduated with a B.A in psychology with a 3.141 gpa/current SGpa-2.8( minus my other missing Pre-reqs) and I also just got my A.S in science ( I figured why not get my A.S, since I did not 2 years ago when I was attending a C.C).During my time college, I was in the national honor society as well as PSI CHI ( national honor society in psychology). Anyways I plan on going back to college in the fall in order to complete my pre-med requirements. So far the only courses that I have taken are General Bio I, II ( Honors) and genetics which I received a C ( both bio's ...

Chances of getting into med schools with your scores
by foville1859 (Posted Thu Jul 18, 2013 12:39 am)Hello! The overall GPA for two years at Arizona State is 3.3, is that correct, couldn't quite follow the numbers in the first part. Also, the transcript and grades from the associates degree have to be included in the AMCAS application, so that may affect it. MCAT is really important, it's hard to say without knowing the results, what range of schools your application is numerically competitive at. There is some truth about the computerization of the first stage of the application review at many schools I wouldn't retake Calculus just to prove the point of getting a better g...

Recent Cancer Survivor Chances for Medical School Admission
by Enot (Posted Tue Jul 16, 2013 2:04 pm)You are an excellent applicant. You have nothing to lose by applying. If you are consistently scoring in the 38-41 range, you will be fine, barring unfortunate events. You have an interesting and compelling story. Your GPA is fine. A high MCAT makes up for it. Good luck. (Source: Med Student Guide)

Funny MCAT article [satire]
by Brady Kinesia (Posted Tue Jul 16, 2013 12:17 pm)You can void the results of an MCAT test, and reschedule for another day. So the student wouldn't "fail" the MCAT, and probably would still be able to re-take it in the same year without having to wait a year to apply. But the satire pretty much captures the mentality of many pre-meds (Source: Med Student Guide)

MCAT Study Ideas
by Brady Kinesia (Posted Thu Jul 11, 2013 8:16 pm)First take an MCAT Practice test, under realistic conditions. Like, take the whole exam in one sitting as you would in the testing center. Can't leave and go do something else, can't look at notes, etc. Then from your scores you have some sense of where you stand in relation to the average (about 24 total score) and in relation to where you need to be (preferably 30+ total score) Then look at all of the questions you got WRONG and what categories they were in. Study those topics for a week or two weeks, then take another practice test, and so on. (Source: Med Student Guide)

Strong Recommendation Letters
by Brady Kinesia (Posted Tue Jul 09, 2013 10:40 am)I would think of the application review process as being several stages. With med schools receiving 5000 - 10000 applications, it's not possible for them to go through them all, so at many schools there may be a lower-limit cutoff based on grades and MCAT. Could be a hard-limit cutoff in which they just throw out all applications below a certain number, or "soft limit", in which very few below a certain number are accepted, but they search for certain exceptional factors. Go in to it under the assumption that they won't read your letters of recommendation if your numbers a...
